Prayers for my Dog, Mocha

Oh good God.....

Our miniature 13 year old German Shepherd, Mocha, got the shock of his life today. Literally.
Image

We're training him on the "Invisible Fence".....well long story short, his hearing / vision is not as "clear" as it once was.

This morning, he got away from Mark, and went thru TWO of the barriers, and got zapped.

He was on the ground, shaking, with his eyes darting all over the place.

THE GOOD NEWS: just a few minutes ago, he can walk kinda dizzily, but under his own power.
I just hope that nothing severe happened to him.

WHAT A DAY.

OMG. Did you take him to the vet? Those "invisible fences" are cruel and shouldn't be on the market. I can't believe anyone who loves their pet would subject them to that. It is insane to expect a dog to understand that there is an invisible line they can't cross, especially an older dog like yours. People who buy those shock collars should be forced to wear them and see how much fun it is to get electrocuted.

Nora...I hope he is okay!

Keep us updated....a trip to the VET may be needed!

Mark called the Vet immediately......they weren't too happy with us that we got a "Fence" for an older dog.

Well, it was either get some sort of "containment" for the dog, or have the Shelton Police and/or Animal Control Unit show up AGAIN on our doorstep because my Father-In-Law lets him roam around the neighborhood freely :x He's been reported by our neighbors more times than I can count.

OR, chain him up in the back-yard, and hear him barking all day....and the neighbors call and yell at US and THEN call the Animal Control Unit to complain!

Damned if you do; damned if you don't......

Is fencing the yard or a portion of the yard an option?

How is Mocha doing? I hope the poor boy is fully recovered. We need Cesar Milan for our Jack Russell, so I know how frustrating it can be to try and train a determined dog out of certain behaviours (and train other humans not to contribute to those behaviours)!

My Jack Russell would laugh at Cesar. We've been thinking about an electric fence but I'm worried Rex (my jack russell) will dart right through and get shocked like Nora's dog. So I'm hesitant. :?

I would think there'd be a few concerns that older animals may have underlying/undetected issues, such as heart trouble, that would maybe make a shock fence not such a good idea. Maybe that's why the vet was none to happy?

Hey you-all....

Thanks SO MUCH for your thoughts and well-wishes! \~/

 BECAUSE MOCHA IS JUST FINE!!!
He went back outside, with Mark's supervision....and PEED LIKE A RACEHORSE....TWICE!!

Mark brought him to our Vet earlier today.....He's still a bit, um, "stunned" - to say the least.
His heart, blood pressure, breathing, and reactions are all PERFECTLY NORMAL. :D

He's still walks little bit "staggered", but that will subside.....turns out, the reason why his eyes were darting and he was throwing up is because this episode actually aggravated a dormant ear infection - that's why he was reacting the way he was.

He had a bad ear-infection back in January....had to go on a few weeks of Meds.

I think sometimes we try to do what is best for our pets, and I am sure you only had the best of intentions, Nora, you always strike me as a strong advocate for animals. I do think those fences should come with warnings. As consumers, you don't know it would harm your pet, they make it out like it doesn't. I have a better idea Lora, why don't they make the manufacturers of those wicked devices wear one 24/7 and let them stay in their own yards, so they won't make devices to deceive well meaning pet owners. People are not always aware that some of those things can throw the nervous system of an animal far out of whack.

I personally choose not to have a dog. Not because I don't love them. I do, very much. But I cannot be home very much, I teach, and work late some nights. Someone needs to be home a great deal of the time, or companion pets be around. We have 3 cats. They are company to each other, I don't have to worry about barking, and they are strictly indoors.

I feel for folks who have dogs in the city. It is very hard to keep the neighbors happy, and your dog safe, too.
Nora I am glad he is going to be fine. How scary! And like I said, your not the type that would do something knowingly to harm your pet. Your poor heart must have broken! I would look and see if the fine print had a warning. If it didn't I would call the company and give them a piece of my mind! They should be up front about all risks involved.

No; I would NEVER do ANYthing like that!

Your poor heart must have broken!

I was so FURIOUS and freaked out for him at the same time....and THEN, I had to go to work....driving my car; hands still shaking....

I'm looking into pursuing this. If they knew how older Canines behave, they SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING.

 :x

I live in a city and we have just endured a year of a neighbour's dog barking in the back yard 24/7. We had to call the Environmental Health Officer in the end, and to cut a long story short, after noise surveys and refusal on the part of the owner to keep the dog inside at night, the dog was taken away. If you can't spend the time to train a dog and be with it for most of the day/night then you shouldn't have one. If you need to electrocute your dog then perhaps you should think about giving the dog away and getting a goldfish.

Duncan, Nora I am sure would never knowingly try to harm her pet. But this is why I own cats. No barking. The meowing though! Keeps the stray cats up at night! They come to the door, complain! LOL!

My neighbors dog barks all night. I understand the frustration.

Hugs. I am sorry for your dog and you. As I said. If a woman can spill coffee on her lap, full knowing it can burn her, and win a lawsuit...............then someone who had no clue about an "invisible fence" can get laws to ban a cruel product, or get warnings to protect pets. My feelings? I hope they have to remove that horrible product off the market!

Thank you, Babyblue and all....

He is SO MUCH BETTER today!!

This morning, he was in the living-room, laying on his left side....I got down on the floor next to him to say "good morning" and gave him a kiss on his head....I told him that a bunch of people at MelRock are rooting for him and want him to get better.

 He looked at me and GAVE ME HIS RIGHT PAW

It was like he was saying "thank you".

I swear he understands English.
