Baby Tripswitch - Going Under (Jeremey, Myself, Eric Ragno)

Postby StephenWJ » Sat Sep 18, 2010 8:08 am

Hi Guys,

So, Here's a bit of new music for anyone that wants to give it a listen!

This is what i've been working on with Jeremey since i've been touring with Frontiers. Eric Ragno is on keys and my buddy Jeremy Thomas from Waking Jonah is playing drums.

It was originally written about 2 years ago when I first wrote with Jeremey but it took us a while to get the ball in motion to finally record and finish this thing. Thought i'd throw it out for you guys to have a listen. Hopefully by the time you click the link it'll no longer say "This video is processing" so the audio quality *should* be good! :)

Have a good day/night/morning guys :)

Stephen

Sounds great. As long as you keep it closer to Street Talk than FTLOSM, I'm on board.

sounds great!

Is the lead vox double tracked? - It sits a bit low in the mix - clarity wise....

Can you say what the signal chain is too.. I'm curious what you used for J's mic.. and preamp...

at 4:30 J hits an amazing note (.."letting Gooooooo" ) and carries it... man you need to keep the song going and let him carry that note.... its fantastic...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Seemed to be lots of strange popping noises on the vocals. Decent song though.

Thanks you guys for checking it out.....The vocal track is a rough demo first take, we are really wanting to finish songs before we produce each track. We did want to get a couple of finished things out there since we are past the summer busy season with Frontiers and have a chance to take stock and churn out some material. I use an MXL V69 tube condenser mic and an Apogee Duet preamp to record my vocals, then I have my channel strip settings in Logic 9 to give a good bit of presence and warmth to the vocal tracks.

Glad you like it, we'll finish this thing if it's the last thing we do....but hopefully it won't be...LOL

Haven't listened to the song yet but I have to say I'm not caring much for the name "Baby Tripswitch".

I'd say its well over 3/4 of the way there. The fundamentals (hook, guitars, vox) are all in place. Just a little more TLC and you got your hands on something special. The band's name is a little too faux-hip (reminds me of Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, or Papa Roach) but it's instantly memorable, so I say keep it!

Hey Guys, thanks for all the feedback!

As Jeremey said, this is a work in progress so regards to mix tweaks etc, that'll be taken care of in due course. This was just to give people an idea of whats to come etc etc.

Oh, and to touch on the name - Basically Jeremey and I spend 70% of our lives sitting next to each other touring and have to amuse ourselves somehow so once upon a time we were coming up with silly band names, originally while working on this record we referred to ourselves as "psychobabytripswitch" just for fun. We decided to stick with Baby Tripswitch just to amuse ourselves - so really its not to be catchy or hip, its just to kinda give ourselves a laugh while we work on it. Hope that clears up a bit of the mystery behind that! :)

Very cool song guys! Looking forward to hearing the finished product, but the demo is very listenable as-is.

I see your point -- it's not edgy enough, and controversy always sells these days. How about Baby Killswitch?

Just "Tripswitch" would be a lot better. If I just hear the word "baby" in any band name, it pretty much immediately turns me off. Definitely doesn't give off a rock vibe.

I was teasing you of course, but if it were just a single name, Killswitch would be a cool one for a band. I'm guessing there is already one out there.

Even in Babylon A.D.?

LOVE this song. Kenny's guitar work is fantastic, as is Jeremey's singing. And that's Ragno in there, how cool is that?

I can't wait to hear the finished product. The demo has the bass drum clipping the rest of the song. Probably Youtube's processing of it.

DAMN!! My bad. I had initially typed Chesney's guitar work, and backspaced and put Kenny. I'm so sorry. I hate country too. LOL!

Anyway, your guitar work is great on that track. Did you guys all sit down together, or was this done over the wires?

Ha thanks bro, I really appreciate it! I actually wrote the music for this originally back in 2008 when Jeremey and I first worked together but it only really came to fruition earlier this year as a completed tune. Everything was done separately. Actually to be fair I tracked with Jeremy (Thomas) to get the drums down with him but all guitars were done at my place, keys done in Cali by Eric and Vox done by Mr. H in Virginia and mixed at my place/on the road while J and I tour.

The latter, hence the its a year too late comment, All in good fun man...but if anyone thinks i play like Kenny (Seay) i'm gonna go start a Vinnie Vincent Invasion cover band and quit Frontiers. (thats an inside Joke, i've been meaning to send Kenny the Vinnie stuff i have forever)

The bridge is great...but the chorus is a little underwhelming. Bridge and chorus are a little similar in their pace and delivery, so to break the two apart and go the less predictable route, I would make "I'm Going Under" after "and I wonder" go 2 steps higher....really blow it apart with that guitar riff in behind it...
When it comes to recording the song proper, it might sound better with a "less is more:" kind of approach.

And I'dd add in a little piano in the intro also....start piano only...then the rest...draw out the track some more.

That's really picking it part - bottom line is that the track is a winner...with some tweaking it could be a classic.

V.V. is the greatest guitar player ever! A true anti-hero, who had the balls to join one of the best known hard rock bands of all time, but refuse to sign any kind of employment contract... who had the balls to launch into unplanned, extended solos while the rest of the band stood around holding their jocks.

I think "In Search of Vinnie Vincent" would make an excellent independent documentary!

I hear you on that stuff. I'd like to hear a bit more piano, but I'd personally keep that soaring guitar intro. Pretty epic.
