I fuckin' love this movie...I remember being scared shitless when I saw it in the theatres as an 8 year old....And I know it wasn't supposed to be as scary as the first one. To me it's the perfect execution of science fiction, future / space themes. You actually give 2 shits about the characters by the time everything "goes down" on screen. As far as action, future / sci fi, nothing's really topped it IMHO...I dig Cameron too (I really enjoyed Avatar, even though it enduced me to sleep). Anyway, i'm buzzed lol..

The only one that can compete is John Carpenters "The Thing".

wonderful film, even though I tend to prefer the extended version over the theatrical cut.

Love that one too...They're doing a sequel - let's see what they do... Carpenter, when he's 'on' is one of the best

Yeah, the extended cut really added to the film, I thought, more build up. The only scene I question is when Bill Paxton (Hudson) is 'bragging' about how bad ass his team is, I think it comes across as excessive and cheesy...The series in my mind tanked completely after Aliens...although I do have some hope for Ridley Scott's return with the upcoming prequel....even though the guy is in his early 70's, one more from him should be good...damn, I bet Cameron could be inspired to do another one...then again, some things are better left alone... Aliens though, was an example if near perfect execution.

I guess I get to be Mr. Unpopular in this thread.

James Cameron needs to stay away from anything "SF" as far as I'm concerned. Avatar was a joke, and it's a sure bet Cameron will turn on his Recyclotron again if he writes another script. Aliens hasn't held up nearly as well as Ridley Scott's atmospheric masterpiece that featured just "one" alien. Same for The Terminator. The first movie ("co-written by Cameron" — see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088247/fullcredits#writers for the note about Harlan Ellison's successful lawsuit) is this nice, tidy little tale of a cyborg from the future on a killing rampage. After that...meh.

Compete? John Carpenter's The Thing is the better film, BY FAR.

Loved it since I first saw it, and I think it's one of the best science fiction films ever. Top-notch!

What are you talking about? Terminator...Aliens...The Abyss...Avatar...he practically re-created the genre....Too many haters out there to appreciate something when it's good. While not my preferred genre, Titanic was really well done. He fought the studios all along the way on that one too (Even after his previous successes). Finally he had the budget and time to do the movie he wanted, and he continues to push the technology to uncharted areas....Look at how much better his motion capture is compared to anything Robert Zemeckis has done recently (Beowulf, Christmas Carol, etc)...night and day quality... As for Aliens - it was done at a moment of time (mid 80s) - Sure, 'Alien' probably holds up better as an exercise of extreme claustrophobia, but who wants to watch that? Even Ridley Scott admitted Cameron raised the bar, and will target to improve upon that with his upcoming prequel (definitely looking forward to that!) In the end, I like a roller coaster ride, and Aliens continues to deliver. I mean, almost every other line of dialogue is classically quotable banter... I'll admit it probably holds a special place in the chockles of my heart (maybe perhaps, even the sub chockles), due to watching it in my youth, but come on, why the hate??

I think the first Alien outdoes everything else. I saw it at the Drive-in and despite not having stereo sound back in those days (you had the little speaker box you hung on your window) the movie was just epic. When you're in your car and everything except the screen is pitch black outside, helping you buy into that feeling of being in isolated space, it was just the perfect setting.

Aliens was great as an action flick but for sheer terror, I say the first one takes the cake.

Bill Paxton stole the show. So many great one liners from him in that film we could have a thread just on that. "Five meters" - "That can't be. That's inside the room" - "ITS READING RIGHT, MAN" :)

I loved this movie from a philosophical/sociological standpoint....very 'family'-centric storyline. Mother, Father, Daughter....Ripley, Bishop, Newt...

" Hey man, we're not going to survive 17 hours man! Those things are going to come in here and they're going to get us and..... " ( Ripley ) This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no military training. " ( Hudson ) " Why don't ya put her in charge!!! "

good point, and being much more of an action fan than a horror fan (which I am 99% of the time NOT), the 2nd one every time!

The smart thing is that Cameron didn't try and top the first movie by remaking it, and went in a different direction altogether. That doesn't happen very often these days. Remake ad infinitum instead.

THAT was my favorite Bill Paxton line from the whole movie!

Oh and the female marine in that movie, wasn't she later in Titanic also? The one with the two kids and she says "It'll all be over soon"... could swear that's her, lol...

Paxton and Jeanette Goldstein and Lance Henriksen were all in this great forgotten vampire film that came out in '87 called Near Dark. It was directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Yes, THAT Kathryn Bigelow.

The Abyss is no big deal. Nobody gives a shit about that movie, anymore. It was okay for the time. Avatar is one of the most overrated pieces of schlock ever. It's not about being a hater. I'm just callin' 'em as I see 'em. And yes, Cam is definitely pushing FX over story. THAT much was hysterically obvious with the narrative trainwreck of Cosmic Pocahontas aka Avatar.
