Eric Stoltz the original Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future'

Amazing how destiny works when instant classics take form. Weird and unusual things happen that pan out for the better for history. This kind of reminds me of the lead role of Rocky and how everyone wanted Burt Reynolds but Stallone said it was either him or nobody to play Rocky.

Everyone knows the classic 1985 film "Back to the Future" featured a boyish Michael J. Fox in a winning performance as Marty McFly.

But Fox was not the original McFly. In fact, Eric Stoltz was five weeks into shooting the famed McFly role when director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis made a drastic production decision -- changing his lead actor.

Details of the shocking Hollywood switch and never-before-seen footage of Stoltz as McFly are part of the extras package for the "Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy" to be released on Blu-Ray on Oct. 26.

Zemeckis says the casting change was "this horrific decision; it was heartbreaking for everybody."

Executive producer Steven Spielberg said that Zemeckis consulted him before pursuing the casting change.

"(Zemeckis) showed me the first five weeks of shooting that he had put together," Spielberg said. " And he said, 'I just don't think we're getting the laughs I was hoping we would get.' "

Spielberg said he realized his director "was absolutely correct."

The rest is pop-culture history. Zemeckis was able to "convince the studio to let me reshoot five weeks of work," and Michael J. Fox was cast in a career-defining role. "Back to the Future," released on Oct. 26, 1986, would go on to gross $381 million worldwide and lead to two further sequels.

I guess it's news (again) because of the anniversary dvd coming out? I remember reading about that a long time ago... can't imagine it without MJ Fox, but you know, Eric Stoltz is pretty cool... still might have been ok! :lol:

I never even read about this before haha. Interesting. Stoltz actually does look like the McFly character but they said his comedy sense wasn't there. Michael J. Fox stepped in a nailed what turned into a classic.

I LOVE BACK TO THE FUTURE I II & III, I love how the 2nd one ends when Marty reads the letter sent by doc...the western union guy gets out of his car... we had a bet if you would show up or not... classic...

Never saw the movie and never knew who "Marty McFly" was, even though I'd heard the name a million times. Now I know! :lol: 8)

I'd be curious to see the footage but that's about it.

I remember seeing them in theaters with friends when they came out, true timeless classics!

Agreed. There's also a rumor going around that Vin Diesel is in the running to be the next RAMBO. I'd seriously puke in my pants and shit out of my mouth if this happens. Terrible. LEAVE RAMBO ALONE!

I honestly read that as "Vin Diesel is ruining the next Rambo"

Though... that might be a little more accurate.

Yea last I heard he shelved Rambo 5.

The ending of last one put closure on it anyway I thought.

Wow I can't imagine anyone but Michael J. Fox in that role, but
can definitely see why Eric Stoltz would have fit, same babyface
kind of look and all, lol.

wow...didn't know that. Always liked Eric Stoltz's acting...but they're right, MJF has more (great) comedic chops...doesn't hurt, either, being short in stature and having a boyish face....can pull off playing teenager well into his 20's.

Highly enjoyed the first movie (I recognized somes scenes from Mill Valley, CA where I was living at the time) music from Huey Lewis & the news was great...the next 2 (sequels) and storylines not so much.

The first back to the Future was pretty close to flawlessly executed. It hit the exact right tone on a lot of scenes that could have gone horribly wrong if done differently. Pretty close to a perfect cast also. Be interesting to see how much of the Eric Stoltz footage is on the Blu-Ray. With 5 weeks of filming, there should have been at least 30 minutes of film completed--if not more--unless they did the big f/x material to begin with.

2nd movie was a bit of a mixed bag for me. A lot of it seemed to be going through the checklist of what made #1 work. OK, the audience loved Biff going into the manure truck the first time, let's do it again. Too often, it seemed like it was ripping itself off. Where things had been fresh the first time, they seemed a little tired the second time around. There were some good moments and it works most of the time, but a few too many cliche ones also.

the 3rd movie at least abandoned ripping off the others with some originality, but I think the little tired formula is a pretty good assessment. Generally enjoyable however, and the Marty/Doc relationship still worked.

Yes... in general, for me, I always seem to prefer the original. If the 1st movie is so great, the sequel cannot live to the standard causing a mild letdown. There's only 2 famous movie sequels that I ever enjoyed more than the original, and that's Superman #2 and Star Wars #2.

Reminds me of a band that did remakes of classics. Hmmmmmmm :roll: That was a little tired the second time around too.
