Interesting. They're using Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) to produce one of their upcoming albums. (They are working on several.) He's the second half of Gnarls Barkley and writes all their music and was the collaborator on the Broken Bells duo I posted as best new album last year. That's an interesting choice with U2. I don't see that pairing, but Danger Mouse is beyond talented. Bono also said his back problem was worse than stated. He had partial paralysis of his leg before the operation. And I read in another interview he was facing permanent paralysis before the operation because the disc material in his back was breaking off and severing nerves.

At least it will be something different, regardless. It's not going to alter their ticket sales either way when they go on tour.

True. And I like the idea of the second album, club remixes of their music with Guetta and Redone. But there are so many brilliant remixes already of a lot of their songs on YouTube. The last album really lends itself well to club remixes from what I've seen on YouTube.

It's definitely a winning situation using Burton. Something similar is David Gilmour playing on The Orb's new album which has gone over quite well. The collaborations really gives the older artist a chance of gathering a few new fans from a younger demographic so there's really no down side to this.

I hope it's better than that last crap they released. "No Line on the Horizon" was the worst thing they've done since "Pop" and "Zooropa".

Well, I like the album. But I do find it interesting, they were supposed to drop a new album this year as a companion album to the last one. The wrote the songs all at the same time. They scrapped that idea. And this quote in the interview is telling:

Have to come clean and be honest. Look, if any year, especially now, that either U2 or Springsteen put out a record, it is ALWAYS nominated in those categories and it ALWAYS wins too. Bruce's last record was OK, but still won awards, and IMHO, it shouldn't have. U2 is NO different. They are a great band to be sure, but just because they get nominated and/or win, it doesn't make it a "great" effort.

And Rolling Stone LOVES both of these acts. No matter what they do, it always gets 5 stars.

What do you pick... WoaD or Magic? For me, WoaD has a few standouts (Outlaw Pete, Kingdom of Days, and The Wrestler... MAYBE Queen of the Supermarket), but Magic killed it for consistency and it had some great tunes as well

I really find U2's new album to be a really solid album. I really enjoy it. But best of the year, no.

U2 has songwriters? WTF?

No. DM wrote all the music for Gnarls Barkley, which is a duo.

Bono writes almost all their lyrics and The Edge the melody. But they do use outside songwriters to co-write sometimes. They said they're bringing him in as a producer, which he also produces, but, who knows, maybe he will do a little co-writing with them.

Magic is a lot better album IMO. WOAD was thrown together with leftovers, and Bruce and Brendan O'Brien went in and recorded it and said, "fuck it, let's tour again and make another 200 mil." Outlaw Pete is a phenominol live tune, Kingdom of Days should have been song of the year, and the Wrestler did win an award. WOAD had some clunkers on it too dude.

Exactly what I was thinking. Awards in the music industry, especially in the last 15-20 or so, mean almost nothing.
