TAUNTON, Mass. -- A 52-year-old driver from Rhode Island faced judge in Taunton on Monday after his ninth DUI offense.

Vernon Perry was pulled over in Seekonk over the weekend.

“He said he was going to Rhode Island,” said Captain Craig Mace of the Seekonk Police Department. “But, traveling eastbound you’re obviously going more inbound to Massachusetts.”

Police said Perry was caught behind the wheel speeding and swerving. Investigators claimed that Perry failed field sobriety tests.

“Mr. Perry was asked to recite the alphabet and he was unable to do so successfully. He was asked to stand on one leg. The gentleman lost his balance,” said Capt. Mace.

At the time of the arrest, Perry had a valid driver’s license.

The Department of Transportation said Perry’s last conviction for OUI was in 2001. For that charge, he received a four-year suspension. All of his other previous cases were in the 1980’s.

With this latest arrest, Perry’s license has been suspended for life.

MassDOT officials said that in 2001, Perry couldn’t have his license taken away because back then, according to the law, they could only judge him for his previous ten years of driving. However, the law has since changed, and the courts can now take a look at his lifetime driving record.
