Made some big decisions today...

I'm going back to school!!!  I've really been in a slump for the last few months (probably all Andrew's fault!), and I decided that I need to do more with my life. I have served in the Army and the Army National Guard for a total of over 19 years. I only have about 15 years of active duty service, and I should be able to stay in for another 7-9 years depending on my rank until I reach 22-24 years of service.

With that said, I have NO clue what I'm going to do when I retire! I've really been down for a few weeks, and just feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing with my life (at this point). After thinking long and hard about it, I've decided to go back to school and finish my Associates. I'm going to be taking some online classes, and I'll see where it takes me. I'm nervous AND excited! I'm sure I won't be on here as much once my classes start, but I'm sure you'll be fine without me. Just thought I'd share the news.

 Thanks everyone. I have NO idea what direction I want to go in yet, but I'm meeting with our education coordinator on Wednesday to get more info. I'm going to knock out the basics first, then just go from there. My education is free, so I really NEED to take advantage of it after all of these years.

Become an MD so you can come on here and order some of these nurses around.

It's never too late to go back to school. My dad did it in his 40's and got his CPA license. Me, if I were you, I'd start a garage band.

Hey! Even I don't have a garage! My garage was made into a den before we moved in! If you put your ear to the wall, you can hear the sputters of Cars past!

Check out Human Resource Development. Sometimes in the Education School and sometimes in the college of business. Prepares you to work in training and leadership development for business and industry. It's a good fit with ex military and ex law enforcement.

Man, I can't even READ it!  How could I explain what I hear to others? I'll be doing some research on my options over the next few weeks, and I'll keep you posted.

They can teach you to read it. I took a course in Music fundamentals. It was fun, I still need to study up on it, I forgot a lot!

Congrats Jim, I hope you are able to get a degree and when you retire from the military do something you enjoy and brings you personal satisfaction. In the meantime, enjoy the journey (no pun intended). :D

I'd bet you could pick that up in a hurry as interested in music as you are. I'm guessing it would be akin to learning to read another language. But the more I think about it, I'm not sure the job market for music teachers is that great. It seems like schools aren't embracing the arts as much as they use to. Might be why music sucks so bad in this day and age.

This obviously comes from someone that has NO clue about the working relationship of nurses and MD's.....hehe!

I ordered many MDs around in my hospital nurse days...but never was I ordered around.

PS, best of luck, Jimbo-you'll do great. I just finished my masters degree in a simiar manner-it's certainly not easy but it's worth it!

You'll do great Jim! You're never too old, and besides, you aren't old anyway... YET   I've always thought it is so ridiculous that people have to make their career choice for life at the age of 18 to 21. Who knows what they want at that age?? I'd say there are probably MANY people in their 30's doing what you are. Good for you! And good luck! 8)

LOL! Hey after becoming a seasoned nurse, WE are the ones who order the MD's around  I've worked with the same great MD's for almost 14 years now, and I told one yesterday "Go in there and see that patient first", and his answer?- "Yes ma'm!" They know we are the ones who hold the fort down, lol.

Best of luck Jim!

You don't really make a career choice in college if that's what you're getting at, save technical majors like Engineering, Nursing, Law, and Accounting. And even for law/medicine, lots of kids still can (and do) change their minds halfway through college before committing to the long haul.

Also, what would you have people do, flip burgers for $6/hr until they are 25 or 30, finally decide they want to grow up and figure out what they want to do, and commit themselves to something?

Lynn, I get where you're coming from here, but take this from me (a younger person), there is already a staggering amount of immaturity and lack of responsibility among my generation for their future. No need to encourage it further. When it comes to young college-age or recently graduated people complaining about "not knowing what they want to do with themselves," it's usually just them not wanting to accept responsibility and face the music: It's time to get up every morning, do the 9-5, and generally be an "adult." It rarely has anything to do with the actual jobs they are doing.

I wish you the best, Jim. I've considered going back for some courses, maybe thru an online program, but the chances of my actually doing it anytime soon are pretty slim. That's cool if you can do it!

Be sure and include your yearbook photo in with your transcript.

Haha! Yep, some we have to directly order around and others we have to be more creative...you know, like when you tell the patient, in front of the doctor....and now Dr Jones is going to do this... and the reason he's going to do that is because......and he's NOT going to do this.....because that could happen...

yup.

i went back in my early 30s -with 4 kids at home. i had a life long history of music playing, reading, teaching and majoring in music ed almost killed me. :-/ i did go back to teaching public school but the time restraints turned out to be prohibitive--not enough time for grandbabies!! besides, there r lots of things to do in the music field aside from teaching.

I am well on my way now to building a music academy--one student at a time!!! arggg. i am opening my own publishing company in order to publish my own arrangements and others after that. There is more but I'll spare you....

Life begins at 50 so get a running start! I wish I had started earlier but oh well. our favorite THP sez, march forward, don't look back.

congrats, Jim. I applaud u. when times get tough, just say, I can make it til friday. or i can make it til tomorrow. OR I can make it til LUNCH! keep in touch with us.
