2 different type songs/singers.....not fair to judge. IMHO

I think they are very similar songs in terms of mood and structure. Replace the orchestra on Gethsemane with guitair and you have an amazing rock song.

Nothing touches Ted Neely on Gethsemane. I don't even know what version that was without clicking but I did Jesus in JCS in high school and Neely was my God at the time. I met him many years later and I got vaklempt and gave him a big hug and told him how much I absolutely loved him. I geeked out.

They're both good and Perry's is just as good as Neely's.

I'm going to make a correction on my previous statement, it's not just Perry at his best it's the whole band at their best.

Not impressed by Balsamo at all. He uses too much vibrato and sounds too theatrical. Boring as hell to me.

I've had the pleasure of listening to this SB performance many times, it's no less than incredible ...emotional,
heartfelt, effortless!!
I've just listened to the two back to back three times now...
sorry, no way SB's performance, here, comes close to the perfection of this SP vocal performance.

For me, SB's performance lacks the soulfulness in his delivery (replaced by vibrato) ...which makes me wonder if I would've even
felt the emotion of this piece w/out the theatrics.

Now if we're talking about hitting notes ...just listen
to the last few seconds of MF and throw in the towel!!

The song belongs to Neely, Jeremy. I too got to meet the man, about 18 years ago, after one of the first JCS revival shows here in San Diego at the Civic Theater...met Dennis DeYoung (Potius Pilate) as well as Carl Anderson (Judas), who, like Neely, was in the film version.

It does. I saw that show, front row seats - I think it was also about 17 or 18 years ago also, with Neely and Anderson. It was magic! I remember it was the first live musical/theatre I dragged my now-husband to (not his thing) - he loved it!!! Saw one a few years later with Neely again (but no Carl, sadly).
