Josh is great dude and phenomenal guitarist, but because he was in the Storm, has done work with Hugo and likes a sound similar to the "Journey" guitar sound, he will always be in Schon's shadow.

I don't mean to take anything away from Josh, but that is the simple truth of it.

Josh is one of the few guitarists that can capture the magic tone that Neal has. However, and this is not a knock, he fails to inject life and emotion into songs like Neal does. But, then again, very few do.

Try out this track. It's Josh at his finest. He played this in my studio while I watched in awe, goosebumps up and down my body. The man is pure emotion.

Here's a great clip of Josh (especially the second half of this clip). Check out around the 2:30 mark... AMAZING! I talked to Josh several times several years ago about collaberating, and he was one of the coolest, most down-to-earth guys out there. VERY nice guy.

Well, Ramos was heavily influenced by Schon's playing. They have a similar tone, very blues oriented players who can also shred. You don't find many guys who can shine at both bluesy emotional playing and shredding, most players are usually only great at one of those things but not the other.

In fairness to Ramos, I've heard tons more of Schon's playing. I'm not saying that Ramos is too far behind Schon as a guitarist. I just feel that Schon is a little better, and I doubt that I'll ever feel any differently.

Not guilty is my verdict. Aside from " ... in the niiiiiight" there isn't any other similarity to DSB. This song is original but, like Eric mentioned, also a homage. But that doesn't make it a ripoff. Decent tune, too. I really thought Hugo sounded a lot like Augeri on the song, but with a clearer tenor and better pitch.

well, it seems as I have hit a nerve.

Yes, it's those words...but it's more than that also. The chorus isn't that far off from the "strangers, waiting, up and down the blvd"....and I have no problem with that. It's a slight tip of the hat to DSB. When you throw the key phrase and vocal hook of DSB on top of it, it simply takes it too far for me. You're doing the homage thing already without that line. Up to that point, it's close enough to show influences, but you're staying on the right side of the line. When I hear the "in the night", it takes me right out of the song because I'm hearing "look at my Journey homage here!!!". It doesn't work for me.

I understand what you were trying to do. I just think you went too far in hitting the listener over the head with a block of wood, when subtle would have worked better. With someone other than Hugo singing in a lower octave, it might have worked to get the reference in there, but as is, it's just too close and crosses a line between respect/homage and ripoff.

The song was recorded and finished months before Hugo got involved and wrote the lyrical melodies. Thanks to St. John for a fair & objective review. As for kgdjpubs, I guess you're entitled to you opinion, even if I don't really understand it. But I can tell you it's not a ripoff. The album didn't come together as I had expected or hoped, but it has some standout moments (including this one) that I'm really proud of.

Oh yeah - Josh Ramos is an incredibly talent and an extremely warm guy, and I miss working with him very much. The album was recorded when Jeff first joined Journey. Josh drove me through Northern California and told me storires about Sammy Hagar, Bryan Adams & the making of the Raised on Radio album. I will treasure those days forever.

you really wrote that song??? AWESOME! I love that entire disc but that song especially. I dont mind the DSB reference but to be honest everytime someone new hears it they swear it was definetly "inspired"..and I mean that in a good way!

any other hugo tunes you pen? I think my favorite hugo disc is Time on earth...that is great. I really dig the Triumph "magic power" redo..
