Driving in Snow - did this happen to any of you? >:(

GOD - I HATE driving in snow!

Today's snow was heavy, with cornflake-sized snowflakes - approx. 3-6", with no sign of stopping.

Over the last 2 decades, I have wrecked 2 cars:
1. Spun downhill and hit a Phone-Pole
2. Went diagonally into a car, while going around a left-bend corner. :x

Today at 5PM, I drove from Bridgeport to Shelton...mind you, a 20 minute drive...with no problem....drove on 108; bunch of hills....dropped down to L2; drove at 10 mph; navigated the hills with NO PROBLEM...got to a stoplight at the green near my house; went to take a left around the Green...

and went DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE ROAD AND GOT STUCK IN A SNOWBANK - approx. 1 minute away from my house! ARGH!

Well, the crazy thing is: they cancelled all schools and all school-related activities...but when I was getting into my car at 8:30 this morning,
the sun was out.

Sorry about your car! :(

Well, nothing happened to my car today; no damage....THANK GOD!

Learn how to drive  ;)
A car , specially not 4WD/AWD reacts differently with snow around , so learn how to use your brakes early and without slamming and jamming them! Good luck :)

I slid my first car down a bank when I was 20. The roads were covered and slippery and I remember I was trying to put Guns N Roses on the CD player and kinda lost control. Totally embarrassing!

I've been driving in snow and ice since I got my license. I'm happy to say that I've never as much as slid through a stop sign.....but now I probably just jinxed myself by saying that...I better stay in all weekend and not go anywhere!!!!

Um, I had to learn how to drive 3 months after my 16th birthday, so that would be January.....in Waterbury, CT....they DO NOT PLOW.
So, yeah....I had to learn pretty damn quick.

But black ice takes no prisoners.

I was in L2...the lowest gear for traction - going less than 15 mph.
I did not slam on my brakes.

When you have 3-6" of snow and they don't even plow it , it's not called BLACK ICE ! :p. It's called WHITE ROAD !
Take my advise and learn to drive , dear ?! :)

I was referring to "black ice" in my 2 prior snow experiences: spinning out, and going across the road.

I haven't had that happen recently but I did get stuck at the end of my driveway one time about three years ago. Our driveway is probably only about 20 feet long and I'd shoveled the whole thing out but there was enough in the street that, when I tried to gas it a little while in reverse, I didn't make it far enough into the street and stopped right there at the end of my driveway. Took me and about two other guys about twenty minutes to get me out. Unfortunately, that truck wasn't a 4x4.

Yup. Got stuck on the freeway in a blizzard a few weeks ago. Had to call 911 they got me a state trooper and he got me a tow to a motel 6. Let's just say i'll never do that again

Do any newer cars actually not have ABS equipped in them?

My car - a Saturn Ion - DOES have ABS.
...and it scared the HELL out of me - I thought I ran over something
.

I felt a THUD THUD THUD THUD under my feet....like I was running over mini speed-bumps.
Didn't help, tho....I still slid sideways.

That's how they're supposed to sound. Just keep it pressed all the way down. If you let off it deactivates them. They're not designed to help you stop sooner, they allow you to continue to steer the vehicle as you're coming to stop.

My wife totaled our mini van sliding through a stop sign a few weeks ago. Everyone is ok, but the whole thing sucks. I hate driving in snow and ice.

I've never driven in snow... I'll just continue to live down south with the snow birds.

Glad you and your car are ok.

I totalled my 2nd car by hitting a patch of black ice. I swerved off the road, over-corrected and spun into a telephone pole going about 60! The pole hit dead-center on my rear bumper and I could literally touch the pole from the drivers seat. It basically split my car in two, and cut my gas tank in half. Scariest day of my life!

They say your life flashes before your eyes, and mine did that day. It was crazy, but it's like it happened in slow motion. My driver's door was heading straight for that pole, and about 30 feet before we made impact, my front driver's side tire hit a steel manhole that was sticking up about 8 or 9 inches. It ripped my front tire right off of the axle, and spun us into a backwards position right before we hit it.

I walked away without a scratch (so did my friend), and God was definitely with me in that car that day. That's not the only time he's saved me either...

Another way of looking at this is that God was fucking around to see if he could make you shit yourself. He is not a nice person.

It looks black in appearance, and when I when I wrecked my car, I thought it was water. It was early spring in Oregon, and we had a little bit of snow that had been melting. I thought it was just water from the snow melt, and most of it was... just not all of it.

Actually, he came to me in a dream last night and told me that he didn't care for Eurofags and much preferred Americans. This is probably why car insurance is so expensive over here.

Slipping and sliding virtually happens to me everyday in my morning commute. It's terrible and so dangerous to where I live too and how my area I'm mostly in is very hilly and what not. To top it off, the car battery in my vehicle died as well. Not a good start to a Sunday morning when I need to be places.

One of my friends in Cardiff was joking last week "God hates tricky mathematics, that's why VAT is going up to 20%."

That truly sucks. Viva la Revolution?
