TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) -
A mass shooting took place Saturday morning at an event hosted by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

At least 12 people were wounded and Giffords was one of them. The shooter is in custody, according a law enforcement spokesman.

Various conflicting reports are circulating in the local and national media about whether there were fatalities, and the seriousness of Giffords' condition. There is no official word at this time of any fatalities or of the Congresswoman's condition.

President Obama released this statement:

"This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tuscon, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded. We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers."

Our society needs to chill.

I'm calling it right now, I read somewhere that this woman was HUGE into Stem-Cell research, I won't be surprised if this is Religious related.

I believe someone threatened the life of a Republican Congressman in October of last year, although I can't recall his name.

The shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers but nothing that reached the point of actual violence.

A San Francisco man upset with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's support of health care reform pleaded guilty to threatening the Democratic congresswoman and her family, calling her directly on March 25 and threatening to destroy her Northern California home if she voted for health care reform.

In July, a California man known for his anger over left-leaning politics engaged in a shootout with highway patrol officers after planning an attack on the ACLU and another nonprofit group. The man said he wanted to "start a revolution" by killing people at the ACLU and the Tides Foundation.

Giffords herself has drawn the ire of the right, especially for her support of the health care bill from politicians like Sarah Palin.

Her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote to approve the health care law in March, with someone either kicking or shooting out a glass door and window.

The only notable thing I caught while skimming this was "The Communist Manifesto" in his list of books. There's also a link to a video of his on Youtube called "My Final Thoughts" that expresses some Communist ideology.

He's captured alive. He should be tortured to death.

This is just awful.

The person that did this should be chained up and set on fire. If that were a standard punishment for acts so incredible, and acts where there is irrefutable evidence that person committed the crime, and no matter how messed up they are in the head, the thought of burning to death would make even the biggest nutjob shudder at the thought of putting themselves in that situation.

The sad part about this is, he'll get the death penalty, sit on death row for 15 years and then he'll only get lethal injection. He won't have the endure the suffering and torture that he rightfully deserves.

That assumption is way off. Giffords is a conservative Democrat and a big gun rights supporter. The shooter is basically a communist revolutionary who has far more in common with Democrats than he does the tea party or Republicans. He's a left-wing nut job.

BTW...I'm now hearing that he said we needed to "overcome the racist tea party". So much for being involved in the tea party.
