John Waite - "Shadows of Love"

I don't do this too often, but this one deserves the S2M treatment.

Could John Waite suck any worse?!? The guy has a good tone (or timbre, whatever it's called) to his voice, but his vocals and phrasing have always been so simplistic to me it's ridiculous. It's like he feeds you only 2-3 words at a time, but thinks he's hitting you with something heavy. I think he's really Davy Jones from the Monkees!

This new song only strengthens my opinion.

As soon as John Waite stops using the word "World" in every single friggin song he sings, I will listen to him again.

As opposed to what, the mega-masculine act of running down 2nd and 3rd tier musical acts and begging for autographs? :P

That sentence alone has more words than most John Waite songs. Here's how it would be in lyrical form -- close your eyes and imagine John Waite singing it.

As soon as
John Waite
Stops using the word
World

In every single
Friggin song
He sings, I will
Listen to him again

That's funny. I used to really like Waite, but man, change up your lyrics a BIT...
And YES, he DOES look like Davy Jones circa 1985.

I really dug the Babys too before Cain joined. Tony Brock was a great drummer.

I don't know, Rip. You might get quite an argument from Eric Martin. He may not want to relinguish his lead vocal duties....

John Waite is one of the most underrated songwriters and performers of the past 25 years. His 1995 release "Temple Bar" could hold its own against just about anyone this side of Springsteen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_LaeNTMNzU

There's a silent movie
Running off its reel inside my mind
As I try to fall asleep tonight
On prescription lullabyes
In the darkness there's a doorway
That leads me back to you forever
But these days there's only
You and I in photographs
Ambitions and dreams we've shared
Now I wonder who has got the last laugh
Cause I know you're crying
And you know I'm cold inside
Got no expectations for my pride
And I reach for that glittering prize
I remember on our wedding day
Looking back at you
Our eyes met and we said goodbye
As we both said "I do"
Didn't I make a promise baby
I would stand by you forever
But sometimes the best-laid plans
Flare up and blow away
And fairytale logic comes
Sweeps you heart
Your soul'Your world away
Cause I know you're crying
And you know I'm cold inside
And I'm tired of living with that lie
And now time is flying
And you know I miss that fire
But I feel for you
I've got desire
So I reach for that glittering prize
No doll's house dreams
Or valentines
Just the future at the door
Just leaving trains and empty rooms
A broken band of gold
Cause love don't live here anymore
And some nights I'll come and see you
And I know you'll let me in
Two strangers in silence now
Cause you know in love
We could never win
I know you're crying
And you know I'm cold inside
And I'm tired of living with this lie
These days
Cause now time is flying
And you know I miss that fire
Cause I feel for you
I've got desire

We speak out like children
Of the dreams that we chase and pursue
These rights we hold precious
Say it loud enough
And it'll be true
In the company of strangers
Wild conversation
And the hours go by so fast
And you find a lot of wisdom there
At the bottom of the glass
But when the lights go down
And the laughter fades away
Somewhere beneath the moon and stars
All of life certainties they
They all just slip away
And you lie down in God's shadow
At the end
The end of the day
We speak revolution
But the future's already been sold
The masters of diffusion
Spinning their fine webs into gold
And the party's just begun
This matter of resistance
Our ship was built to last
Weç®?e sailing out on troubled seas
Nail your colors to the mast
But when the lights go down
And the laughter fades away
Somewhere beneath the moon and stars
All of life certainties they
They all just slip away
And you lie down in God's shadow
At the end
The end of the day
The avenue is so crowded
And theyç®?e turning up the heat
And the red lights keep on flashing
Out there tonight on Bourbon Street
On Bourbon Street
Wild conversation
And the hours go by so fast
And you find a lot of wisdom there
At the bottom of the glass
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
But when the lights go down
And the laughter fades away
Somewhere beneath the moon and stars
All of life certainties they
They all just slip away
And you lie down in God's shadow
At the end
The end of the day
The end of the day
The end of the day
The end of the day
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Lay down your soul with me
Lay down your soul tonight
Lay down your soul with me
And everything will be alright
It'll be alright

I'm sure you could find a word or phrase used by any singer thats been around for awhile( in many of their songs) . Wetton used "eyes" in almost every Asia song , Journey has their catch words , this is really reaching for a reason to dislike him.

For John Waite it's actually "These Days" that is used in many of his songs. It became something he started doing on purpose and there is a drinking game based on it.

Never judge John Waite by his first single - this I have learned. One of my favorite songs by him is Fly, which he did not write, but turned into a phenomenal song.

Each Waite album contains throw away, middle of the road, and truly great songs.

It's not me who mentioned disliking "world", lol! Even Europe has catch words -- Joey Tempest uses the word "tonight" quite a bit. But all this is smoke and mirrors to deflect from the fact that John Waite gargles schlong juice.

Listen to that song... it's horrible! It so represents everything I don't like about his singing, it could be a parody.

Check out this nugget from Whitesnake...Pretty well written song, in my opinion.

"Sailing Ships"

Do you remember standing on the shore
Head in the clouds, your pockets filled with dreams
Bound for glory on the seven seas of life
But the ocean is deeper than it seems

The wind was with you when you left on the morning tide
You set your sail for an island in the sun
On the horizon, dark clouds up ahead
For the storm has just begun

Take me with you
Take me far away
Lead me to the distant shore

Sail your ship across the water
Spread your wings across the sky
Take the time to see
You're the one who holds the key
Or sailing ships will pass you by

You cry for mercy when you think you've lost your way
You drift alone if all your hope is gone
So find the strength and you will see
You control your destiny after all is said and done

So take me with you
Take me far away
And lead me to the distant shore

Sail your ship across the water
Spread your wings across the sky
Take the time to see
You're the one who holds the key
Or sailing ships will pass
Sailing ships will pass you,
Sailing ships will pass you by...

Take me with you
Take me far away
We'll ride the wind across the sky
Spread your wings and you will see
You control your destiny
So sailing ships don't pass you by

So take me with you
Take me far away
We'll ride the wind across the sky
Spread your wings and you will see
You control your destiny
So sailing ships don't pass
So sailing ships don't pass you
So sailing ships don't pass you by...

Baby, baby, baby, baby
You'll find that you're the only one
Can sail your ship across the sky

That is a great song. Don writes excellent lyrics, too. Here is just a random one I picked from Hell To Pay that I really like:

PROZAC NATION

Safer today to go outside your window
Go down the stairs
You remember the way
New combinations you found in your letter
Ready to fly and escape

You're off the meds and bad tranquilizers
Keeping it down isn’t your style of fun
Taking a walk in the park by the children
All that you want is a smile

Everybody's getting high today
Go on and alter your mind
Fade away
Fade away
Fade away

Let it go, let it go, there’s no reason to stay

All that you want is some peace in the sunshine
Far from the freaks who are on
Staring at TV alone with no sunsets
Time for your oranges and blues
You're off the meds and the bad tranquilizers
Keeping you down isn’t your style of fun
Taking a walk in the park by the children
All that you want is a smile

Everybody's getting high today
Go on and alter your mind
Fade away
Fade away
Fade away

(Prozac, Lithium, Wellbutren, Clonapin, Xanax, Valium, Crack Cocaine, Heroine, Speed, X’s, Hash, Pot, Effexor, Profexor,
Ellexor, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam…)

Everybody's getting high today
Go on and alter your mind

So when they lock you again
In a white room
Holding you down
Antiseptic your fate
You don't belong in a place
Where they talk to themselves
It's just hell

Let it go, let it go, let it
Fade away

All you want is a smile

Let it go, let it go, let it
Fade away

Fade away

Fade away

I LIKE John Waite. Always have. But I'm bored with his use of that word "World". Cheap Trick was big on "Tonight". Train... a ton of their songs have food in them. It's just stuff that irks me. Doesn't mean I hate them, just means, come on, say something different.

I should say, I liked him in some Bad English songs. I think he has a very cool and distinct timbre to his voice, but I think he wastes it. If I had his voice I'd use it much differently. I want to be fair... I've never listened to much of him beyond his radio hits and Bad English, so I'll go watch those other videos.

I saw a comment in an interview Andrew did a while back with Ricky Phillips, who sums up my feelings on John Waite perfectly

http://www.melodicrock.com/interviews/rickyphillips.htm

But John always tries to do that, he always says - I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do it - I want it to be rough, I want it to be raw - Then in the end it sounds like a glossy record.

You know what, I am producing this girl right now, and I was trying to get a point across to her, and I finally realised, and I said come in the house for a minute, and I put on an old Babys record. I said this is what I am getting at. I haven't heard this record for years, so it may sound dated, but I think the energy I am looking for is something like this. I put on Head First. I hadn't heard it for a long long time, and it sounded great! John sounded energised, and rough, and raw, and going for notes and hitting them. There was some magic I hadn't heard John do in fifteen years. He can do it, he's got it, he'll do it, but then when it comes to recording he's thinks he's got the image of the guy who sang Missing You. He's got to take the dress off and do some rocking and rolling.

Waite's got it singing live, but he won't let it loose singing in a studio and sounds like he's prissy-footing around. He's got a cool and very distinctive voice, but he'll never be one of my favorite singers.

I think Styx has 11 songs that mention "Paradise" :)

I'm looking forward to seeing John Waite in April, I can't wait. If there's anything that anyone wants me to ask him, just let me know.

I think Waite's quite a good singer, but his newer material has been awful. I don't really care or notice his phrasing. Just enjoy the sound of his voice. His music does slant far too much towards the easy listening side of things, which is a shame considering he can rock it up when he wants to (Change, Wild Life etc). Good stuff overall though, just have to be in the mood for him.
