Very sad news...

Postby G.I.Jim » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:23 pm

I know this won't mean anything to any of you in here, but a close friend of ours was in a house fire last night, and she lost everything. Last night, she was celebrating with her boyfriend for her birthday, and after a few drinks, she didn't feel good. She went and laid down in her room. Her boyfriend stayed up and started to cook some fries. He laid down while waiting for the grease to heat up, and fell asleep. He woke up during the fire, and got her out of the house. Her dog died in the fire, and luckily her son is safe. He was at his Grandma's for the night. If not, he would have died, since the fire was close to his bedroom. :(

We feel TERRIBLE for them, and we're helping rally stuff together for her. Like I said, she lost EVERYTHING. She made it out of there in a bra, t-shirt, and panties. That's all she has now. The Red Cross gave her a card with $500 which helps, but won't last her long. They have also provided a hotel for her to stay in, which was very nice. We've been having a TON of response here for her, and it looks like a lot of people are going to pull together for her. My wife talked to her today, and I think my wife's in worse shape than SHE is!

I know she's in shock, but she has a lot of friends here, and the outpouring here is amazing. :) For those here who are religious, please say a prayer for her tonight. She could use it. Thanks!

Sorry about your friend Jim. My brothers 3 story condo complex burned down before our eyes last year. Watching the pain in peoples faces was tough. Being bottom floor, he was able to salvage a few things sentimental to him, but it was a virtual loss of everything he owned. The entire building was a loss. I was there the day they let us go in to recover what we could too. I'm shocked they let us, but we were escorted by a firefighter. But they timed us! So we had little time to get what we could. Everything was wet and ashy and ruined since the upper floors caved in on his unit. What was terribly sad were those who came that day, from upper units, who hoped maybe someone would find something of theirs to salvage. But no one did. And sure, the saving grace is they escaped and lived, but it is a horrible feeling when everything you have, and many things of sentiment are just gone.

The worst part is it started from a guy in foreclosure, who barricaded himself in his bedroom, started it on fire, and shot himself in the head. Nice he could destroy so many other lives in the process :x

Anyway, that's great your helping your friends. Hopefully they have insurance. Something my brother didn't have and should have. My mom owned the condo which they STILL havent rebuilt, but thats another story. Insurance still doesn't fix the trauma and lost memories. I'll send some prayers.

Jim, I can shed some light on this, as this exact same thing happened to me.

Back in 2000, I was down at a bar called Cisco's, and it was actually a mexican restaurant, that had a killer bar. I lit a candle in my room because it smelled like shit. Anyway I took off and went down to the bar and left the candle burning. I was throwing back margaritas and tall beers like they were going out of style. Pretty soon I got a call at the bar saying the house was on fire. Oops. I went home and sure enough, it was history.

The good news is insurance. If your friend has insurance, she will be put up in a hotel, and have money for food and clothing. The salvage team will drag everything out onto the lawn and inventory each piece, and record it. If they cannot deem the burnt article as salvageable, they will reimburse you for new stuff. I went an extra mile and said I had 1200 bucks in my sock drawer..(hahaha). Tell your friend to list EVERYTHING she had and even make some shit up, because she is going to "forget" about some stuff anyhow.

Bottom line is this, despite the insurance help, friends are a must during this time for her. She wil need friends and she will need to escape from the hotel and go out to a different place to eat rather than just stay in and eat Dominos and that kind of shit.

Be there for her, that's my point.

Sad news, but very good for her to have support from friends, definitely a must at any time of any loss.

Tito wouldn't even send a sympathy card if it were a relative! Sympathy card + the cost of a stamp = Way out of Tito's budget of $0.00. :?

Thanks for the concerns and the prayers everyone! I know she appreciates them. We have already been given a LOT of things for her already, and will be working on getting her more stuff throughout the week. I think she's going to be fine. Of course it'll take a while before things are ever back to normal for her, but she's got a TON of support! I don't even know why I posted this in here, but I guess I just had to talk about it.

I had dreams all damn night about her, and didn't sleep worth a damn! Hope to see her later this week with a bunch of goodies, and I know she'll feel much better. :D

Sending my prayers their way. My cousin is going through this now. Well hopefully on tail end of it. Her house burned down on Thanksgiving. They were renting and did not have renters insurance. But luckily, as with your friend, people pitched in and they seem to be surviving this. I hope your friend can recover quickly.

Thanks very much for the prayers and concerns! I hate to hear about your cousin going through this too, and I hope she's okay. :( I have a truck-load of stuff in my truck right now to give her tomorrow, and I have much more coming, so I'm excited to be able to help her. I couldn't imagine going through something like this, but I'm glad to see the response that she has from everyone here, and I hope she's back on her feet in no time! :D

GI I hope the best for your friend. A fire in the home can leave a devastation much like the loss of a loved one. I am glad to hear folks in your area do what we do here, pull together for a family in need. I know they cannot replace their memories and things that are personal, but the love of friends can help slowly mend the personal wounds.

Thanks. I'm glad to see so many people pulling together for her, and we've got a LOT of stuff for her! Kitchen table, a fridge, dressers, bed, plates, toys, clothes, etc... She is getting stuff coming in from EVERYWHERE! :D The saddest thing though is that her 5 year old little boy came home from school yesterday and said "mommy... everyone in my class loves me, and they all brought me toys". She told his teacher what had happened, and the teacher talked to the kids about it while he was out for a few days. Each and every kid there brought a toy from their toy boxes for him, and I think it's the sweetest thing I've ever heard. :)

Thanks for all the well wishes for her (except for you Rip... You're going to hell! ).

That's a great story, Jim. It's very sad when things like this happen but it's great that the teacher took the opportunity to give the children in the class a chance to do something good for someone else. I think that gives children a sense of self-worth and it teaches them a great lesson about helping others and not being so selfish.
