Authorities are holding a Muslim cleric who was ousted from Canada three years ago and discovered this month hiding in the trunk of a BMW after after he illegally crossed into San Diego County from Mexico.

Said Jaziri, a Tunisian imam, is expected to testify against American citizen Kenneth Robert Lawler, who was driving the vehicle Jan. 11. Lawler is charged with immigrant smuggling.

According to court documents, Jaziri traveled from Tunisia to Spain to Guatemala to El Salvador to Belize and then to Chetumal, Mexico. He rode a bus from there to Tijuana, where he found someone to smuggle him into the U.S.

Jaziri said he paid $5,000 to a smuggling group, namely a white man named Robert who spoke English.

“He told Robert he just wanted to go to a safe place anywhere in the United States,” court records show.

Jaziri will undergo deportation proceedings for illegal entry and unlawful presence in the U.S. after the case against Lawler is closed, said Steven Pitts, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol.

In 2007, Jaziri was deported from Canada to Tunisia for lying on his refugee application about jail time he served in France years earlier. His supporters said Canadian officials targeted him for his Islamic fundamentalism, according to news reports in Canada.

As imam of the Al-Qods mosque in Montreal, Jaziri was well-known for being outspoken on behalf of Sharia, a strict form of Islamic law, including his denunciation of homosexuality.

News reports also said he was a notable figure on issues related to reasonable accommodation, which in Canada refers to the debate over whether anti-discrimination laws require the government, schools, businesses and others to change certain practices to honor minorities’ cultural and religious beliefs.

The apprehension of a high-profile and controversial figure is unusual in the San Diego border sector, Pitts said.

Last year, only 2 percent of the people apprehended in this sector said they weren’t Mexican, Pitts said. A breakdown of countries of origin for those 1,306 individuals wasn’t immediately available. So far this year, 254 of the sector’s 11,000 apprehensions have been listed as “other than Mexican.”

Jaziri successfully scaled a border wall on Jan. 10 and made an overnight trek through the backcountry, according to court documents. He, the guide and Mexican national Gonzalo Gutierrez-Mercado emerged near Tierra Del Sol Road close to the intersection of Moon Valley Road, where the BMW was waiting. The guide helped the men into the vehicle before he ran away, the documents said.

A group of state firefighters watched the men climb into the BMW and one of them reported the incident to a border Patrol agent. The agent then alerted other agents, who spotted the vehicle and apprehended it near the Golden Acorn Casino.

Lawler, who told authorities that he was homeless and unemployed, said he was instructed to take Jaziri and Gutierrez-Mercado to a parking lot in Mission Viejo for a hand-off. The travelers’ final destination remains unknown, according to court records.

I agree the Islamic religion is a crap religion. I am against it and the way they treat women, minorities, etc. However, the difference between that and a blanket statement that about hating ALL Muslims is completely different. You still have to treat people on an individual basis. I know of Muslims who are nothing like what we see portrayed in the media. There are certainly a lot of violent, extremist Muslims in the world but the ones who are good, no matter if their a majority, minority, or whatever of their religion, don't deserve to be painted with the same brushstroke that the ones engaging in bad behavior are.

I'll be friendly with a Muslim that's about as Catholic as I am: Maybe a Muslim in "name," but doesn't do any of that weird bullshit. But, once you get into the arranged marriage and all that crap, shariah etc., that shit is just too fucked up for me to even consider being on a social level with anyone who practices as such.

I agree with you on this. We certainly have some problems in this country but, far and away, the U.S. treats women, minorities, etc., far better than most other places in this crappy world.

Like Fred Phelps and his crew, Muslims, every single one of them, should be exterminated. They have an 1800 year history of nothing but violence. From their infant stages when they conquered from Spain to China, to present day infiltration from Sudan to Indonesia, they have one thing in mind ... world domination. The entire world of religions have evolved in their tolerances, save for one. Along the way, they have killed 150 million people. Their zeal hasn't waned in any of those 1800 years. History has shown them to be nothing but a violent and useless menace, offering zero tolerance and mandating conversion.

The second half of the Qur'an lays out a bloody but mandatory path to fulfillment, and I simply can't respect or co-exist with anyone that uses this book as the cornerstone of their belief system. I have taken a non-violent approach to these maggots. My civility, temperament and free belief system allow me to do that. However, don't get me wrong here ... I would like nothing more than to see them all disappear from this country. I passively hate them all. They're a disease, not a religion. As an American citizen, anyone that chums up to them or is anything more than outwardly indifferent to them is a fucking treasonous pig. It would be like embracing cancer in one of your parents, children or other loved one because it's not yet terminal. See them for what they are, folks. If 1800 years of bloody history and recent events aren't enough, get a fucking CAT scan because you're probably brain dead.

I read both of them for exactly this reason; to prevent from being backed up in a corner by some moron. The King James version of the bible is actually a decent read. The Quaran is just fanatic bullshit. There's actually no reason for anyone to read the book before drawing the conclusion that something is iffy about it. Just turn on the news.

I kinda like the principles of the Enlightenment, as well as the fact that women are equal to men. I like my liberty, and as so would be stupid not to be skeptical about Islam.

If you have actually read the Quran, break it down , explain the parts (in your words with facts to back it up ) that you hated the most, and the parts you still hated but not as much. Just simply bring on the first "chapter" and analys it for us ! this could be entertaining

That all depends on what your definition of "together" (coexist = exist together)is. If together is simply a matter of being accidentally around or near them, then, yes, I am. But I look at it as more a matter of of being around them intentionally and with purpose ... and I'll never fucking do that.

being around them and hanging with them intentionally isnt co-existing with them. So, yes, you are co-existing with them: You live , with them being somehow a part of your life, without you wanting or liking it.

Ohhhh come on Parfy, it doesn't take theologian to know that the parables and basic tenets of both the Bible and Qur'an are similar. There are, of course, some marked differences in ideology once you get into the New Testament but you have to appreciate that the monotheistic religions all developed from a similar starting point. Look through the Torah, women were property, menstrual women had to remain in a bath for the duration of their cycle as they were considered to be eeking liquid evil just about. (I think there's some truth there though ) Punishments were barbaric. Abraham being told to slaughter his son to "test" his faith? That's a little fanatic. The interpretations of certain scriptures to their respective cultures is what defines religion from fanaticism.

The trouble today is humanity's toxic "Us vs. Them" mentality with a violent extreme hurled at Muslims as an entire group. I wonder what's so different about their religious extremists today as compared to... oh, I don't know... Christian crusaders in the middle ages? Conquistadors? The Inquisition? Salem Witch Trials? It's the exact same stuff, just on a modern scale which means a different dynamic of dangers. The problem isn't necessarily in people having a certain belief set, the problem is people being human. Those ghosts in the machine saying to kill and eradicate all that is different from "them" and which they also don't understand.

That goes for Muslim extremists wanting to genocide Americans to Americans wanting to genocide Muslims.
