Snow day!

Postby Rick » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:46 pm

It's nasty out there. It's been sleeting and snowing for a few hours now. It's 21 degrees with a 35 mph straight wind and gusts to 45. The wind chill is 1. DFW and Love Field are closed. I'm staying inside for sure.

You pussies in Texas don't even know what snow is  Dude...we have two FEET of the shit rolling into Boston over the next 36 hours! They'd probably have to shut the entire state of Texas down until July if that snow ever hit anywhere near you.

If tomorrow that four legged little fur ball doesn't come out of his hole to say Spring will be here soonly, I'm going to Pennsylvania so I can slice and serve him to Jack Frost.

I second that motion!

And we're getting 2 feet in 24 hours, so put that in your pipe and smoke it, John-Boy!

Hoping to have my first "snow day" in about 12 years tomorrow. Junk food, Wii, and not having a heart attack shoveling are in my plans. Y'all be safe!

That dear Dean is a picture of the oldest and youngest members of my family.
My Grandmother and my new cousin.
She hasn't been well lately and I'm keeping her close in sight and spirit.

I'll change it now as to show you how I'm really feeling today, gimme a second.

Worst weather *I* have seen in my life....although not the coldest. That storm was epic in scope. We didn't have school for TWO weeks.

Is 40 young to you?, if so I think you're wonderful.
The biggest snow storm I recall in my area was in 1977.
I was having my tonsils out and it kept the hospital staff and my Father there
for a couple of days.

and we used to WALK TO SCHOOL... :-)... not have our mommies drive in this like they do now... just saying...

if you look at the nws weather site winter storm warnings all the way from NY to NEW MEXICO... crazy...

first time STL has ever had a blizzard warning...

and back in the spring of 1973... that was a doozy for Iowa...

and more recent.. forgot the JANUARY of 1996... three weeks of blizzards 15 inches or so each storm bitter cold... dang... two weeks with below zero temps...

Well, even if I had been alive for that... I still didn't move to Chicago until 3 years ago... :P
I've been in one other "real" blizzard before, the whopper Nor'easter in March of 1993. We got 30"+. Plus Appalachian snowdrifts of 10' in places = digging tunnels to help people get out of their houses.

In 78, in Erie, the snow piles were so high, you could walk down the street and not see homes. Drifts were as high as rooftops on some homes. I vividly remember walking in my back yard to my swing set (I was 10) and the only part of it not covered by snow was the metal bar across the top. Our shed was buried. The piles of snow were so high in some streets and parking lots, they had to haul some of the snow out of the city. I believe we were out of school for a couple of weeks that winter. A RARITY for Erie. Those people can get 2 feet overnight, and they are at work the next morning. That city is not for wimps  I'm happy to be in my 78 degree Orlando weather today though :)

Can't believe some of you had two weeks from school because of a Winter storm....wow, lucky!
Most we ever saw was a two day shut down.

Well, they get winter storms all the time and normally the most they do is delays for school. It's rare to cancel there. It was just a unique storm I guess. I think it was because the blizzard lasted so many days. The part of Lake Erie that Erie sits on, is a dumping ground. It's a snow belt every winter. So they had this blizzard and lake effect snow. With all the TONS of snow I grew up with, from October through March, that is the worst year I can remember! There were other years with blizzards. Just not like that!

See, yours was in Feb caused by a Noreaster! I think ours was in January? And more like the storm that is going through the Midwest and through PA today and tomorrow. Plus the lake snow. I think there was more than one that year! I was only 10 though. The 70's had WAY worse snow storms than the 80's and 90's! It seems maybe that pattern could be starting again? Who knows. It seems like bad winters are hit or miss these days.

Looks like The Blizzard Of 78 to me, which was essentially a hurricane with snow. Truly a once in a lifetime storm. No school for an entire week and I enjoyed every second of it.

While the overall trend during the next 100 years is a warming one, there will still be a few cold snaps over that time period. We are currently in the second year of a 10 year cold spell.

We were out for an entire month when I was in 9th grade. Big Nor'easter hit the day after we came back from Christmas break and snowed every Wednesday and Saturday for the following three weeks. Finally went back on Valentine's Day that year. We had to make up so many days. School didn't let out for summer that year until June 28th.
