Utter shite, but looking at the live version they seem to be quite popular.

Nah man we're fine... my perspective on moderation is as one who has done it for a living (HBO, MTV)... and my significant other has been involved with managing online communities since the early 90's.... I'm not sure what yours is... I suspect it's as a user... so I get your (and others) resistance to moderation of any kind... my experience is that it can be done and when done right it actually WORKS.. but most forum owners don't want the expense... or don't believe in it - or both..

I can tell you this.. self-moderation or no moderation will always result in a forum that gets smaller and smaller in the number of regular posters... because those unwilling to "engage" simply remain as lurkers or move on altogether... either way the community does not "grow", it actually shrinks...

anyhoo.. we're good... 8)

You bet, but I couldn't disagree more. This site is moderated perfectly, if you ask me. I've been on countless message boards, including this one. And if my memory serves correctly, I think you have been here as long or longer than me. The membership here hasn't decreased, by any means. I think Andrew's approach of letting shit fly is a good one. He comes in when things get out of order, and takes measures. You probably can't do that with HBO, but this isn't that. So I can see where you would want a stricter moderation. But let me give you one example, and I know this is true. When Deano is here, this place thrives. I don't think I have to say any more.

Sure when Deano is here it appears to thrive... he stirs up a lot of shit.. and the same, regular, posters all join in....

There are a lot of folks who've simply left... or don't post at all because they see the free-for-all, off-topic nature of the posting... which, when not on topic is most likely being directed AT a poster.. instead of a topic... that is by definition personally attacking someone...

I do recall some threads where folks ask... "where the hell is everyone?".... that does not occur on boards where there is lots of participation.

Forums do not grow because of the "regulars"... they grow when new members join and more importantly, participate in on-topic discussion... If lurkers do not join/participate it is because they perceive posting to be off-topic and attacking... we then have a situation where the forum will have to grow "in spite" of the regulars... a situation no forum owner really wants IMHO.

After all, we're here to talk about music not call each other names right? We can all agree to disagree, and I'm sure we can do it civilly too, if we choose to.

In fact, we've just done that.

My comment on moderation - if I see something amiss, I'll deal with it. But I won't waste my edntire day breaking up 5 minute bitch-fights between regulars on here - cause they should know better - and it never lasts.

As for the wider lurking audience - they simply have to jump in and sink or swim. Take a bit of crap and give it back. But at the same time, I won't let anyone bully new users just so they can proove they have a bigger (ie smaller) dick.

And for the last 2 years, this forum is actually closed to new users, unless they contact me or T-Bone direct, as there are about 200 spambots per day that sign up and no one has time to kill all of those once they get into the system.

Plus the fact some users were signing up 3 times a day under different names :)

A future board upgrade should help that though.

Drew, how seamless is the change over going to be for established members?

Not seamless at all

In fact, it will be an all-new board system, starting from scratch. Which is why this one will remain also :)

So will some of us be banished to this site if we are bad there? We will be the reject board here?  Or is the parallel board thing temporary?

Will this board be locked, available for researching the older postings only or will this be the R-rated board and the newer one a plokker friendly zone?

For the experienced plokkers that are battle hardened, it's not an issue but we had a lot that came in and went back out very quickly (or at least went into lurker mode). I'm asking if the new place be is to be like a sanctuary for them, loons and others, (not meaning to single out a certain group) with all the hard core action relegated to this side of the yard .
