The Trials of Being A Singer

 ....You CANNOT DO YOUR JOB WHEN YOU'RE SICK! :x :x

Drummers / Others....Yes; I understand that you would be "under the weather"...but 9 times out of 10 you'd be able to do your job....

But, just imagine if your hands / feet fell off if you were sick.
THEN, MAYBE you can understand why Singers get the "Neurotic / Diva" Label.

I lost my voice; haven't been able to speak / sing for the last 3 days because of WHATEVER I have...fever; chills; bronchial coughing....
It's just now going away.

Just my 2 cents....from MY perspective.....carry on...

I feel for ya. I lose my voice every time I get sick and coughing only makes it worse. I think it took 3 weeks last time to get my full "range" (including falsetto) back.

Maybe the key here is to learn to use the false vocal cords for singing---and yes, there are a few people that can do this! Apparently, you can still lose your voice even singing through them, but it's much harder to do.

Nora, do NOT even try to sing if you have got a cold which affects your lower respiratory tract.
Sing on swollen cords and you could cause damage.

You are a trained singer. You KNOW your voice loss is due to a virus and not bad practice. So that virus and bacteria have to be flushed out of your system before you will feel better. And that virus has inflamed your vocal cords/larynx/pharynx. All you can do is try to bring that inflammation down with the usual manuka honey [NO MENTHOL] propolis, throat coat tea etc.

So, stay silent - whispering is worse than talking - inhale steam, inhale lavender oil drops on your kleenex, eat fresh pineapple and cut out as much dairy as you can.

Then in a few days you will be back to healthy cords.

It happened to me a few weeks ago.
Only another singer understands that sick to the stomach dread you get when you have a gig and your voice goes.

Get well soon.
