Jealousy /Envy among Musicians

Postby S2M » Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:51 am

Do you think other bands/artists/musicians ever get jealous of one another, thinking, 'Damn! I wish I wrote that song'?

In other words, do you think Kevin Cronin is walking around mumbling to himself that he wished he could have wrote/recorded DSB?

or if Nuno Bettancourt is contemplating a scenario where he wrote Wanted Dead or Alive?

There has to be some jealousy/envy in such cases.....

Steve Perry is probably thanking god he didn't write that song. The first time I saw that video I started to wonder if Cronin was gay.

It depends on your role. In every incarnation of every band of which I've been a member - as the singer/keyboardist/keytarist - I've been responsible for the lyrics and the melodies. From time to time I've written a piano-oriented song, but since I've been in mostly hard rock bands with egomaniacal guitarists, that really didn't count for shit, and I was always number two on the totem pole.

I could name about five thousand songs I wish I'd written. Instead my life's work is a few score mediocre power ballads that could MAYBE have been on a Dan Hartman B-Side. Such is life.

Heck, I think the guys in Bon Jovi wish they had written that song...Of course, they "legally" wrote it, at least according to the writing credits.

We've all heard the rumors. They do seem to have an uncanny penchant for churning out hundreds of melodic and listenable songs, even if the lyrics are sometimes painfully cliched.

Holy shit, that's disturbing. It makes me question my masculinity simply because I just wasted three minutes of my life watching it.

My worst effort - among the many candidates - was a mega-turd called "Angel Can I Hold Your Hand". Between my unproduced off-key caterwauling, the fact that it was recorded on an analog four-track, and my penchant for trying to date women out of my league...well, it's a good thing I have the master tape. Although a certain bassist named "Damien" who lives in L.A. still claims to have a copy.

I absolutely believe Steve Perry wishes he had written Faithfully.

Of course he does...didn't Cain once say that Perry asked for that song for his upcoming solo album (ST)? He knew it would be huge and was probably already plotting his exit from Journey.

This made me LMAO! :P

Y&T played a show the same night in Cali as Mr. Big. Dave Meniketti thanks the audience for chosing the Y&T show instead of Mr. Big. Then says......Eric's a friend and I love him to death, but f*ck him man.

 Dave posted under the clip.......

Aah hah - I knew someone would post this.

As I'm sure you can see, tongue in cheek, folks. Eric Martin is a good buddy and I was just messing with them since their show, just down the road from our show, was sold out that night. Regardless, we still had a great turnout. Thanks again to those fans that made this Galaxy Theater show such a memorable event.

Cheers,
-Dave Meniketti

I bet that James Young is envious of Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw
