MelodicDOKK Fest I, April 16th, Dallas

I haven't seen DOKKEN live since the Shadowlife tour, except for Don Dokken opening up solo for Queensryche in Dallas a few years ago. The never seem to tour near me, or at least not on convenient dates. They are playing at a place called Trees in Dallas the Saturday of next week, and I'm going with some of my faithful Dallas amigos.

This is destined to be EPIC, and if I had a way to do a live simulcast on the Web, I'd do it. Expect plenty of pics and maybe some vids though.

I guess nobody cares about Don anymore? After all he's done for heavy metal?!? If it weren't for DOKKEN, then EDEN'S CURSE's cover of "Unchain The Night" would never have existed! Michael Eden cares about Don Dokken, and you should too, just as you should care about Michael Eden. The new EDEN'S CURSE album Trinity is excellent, and puts everything else to shame. And yes, I dropped the extra $20 just to get the Japanese version that had the Dokken cover.

Nikki Sixx is doing a book signing that day, too. I'll consider that Don's opening act. :)

Have fun Ripster! Nothing quite like seeing your favorite band throw down LIVE. LOL believe me, I'm still coming down off the high.

Dude, I jizz over From Conception–Live 1981!!!!

When Don mentioned in an interview the mixing was done for "Dokken Live '82" (that's how he referred to it), I had a throbber right there.

But...why no DVD concerts apart from the '95 Japan show? Why don't they release that German show (with Juan on bass) and/or the '87 BftA show that's on Youtube? Wasn't that issued on VHS?

Sweet!! Motley's first two albums are essential. After that, YMMV...

Oh, I shall! Thanks! Someone made plans for me next weekend... supposedly we are supposed to go out to dinner with the parents of one of my daughter's friends from school, and I was told her dad is in the same field as I and is looking forward to meeting me. I hate to have to break the news soon, but I don't have time for such foolishness. I'm going to be in Dallas watching Dokken with some of my amigos.

I'm going to the book signing, too. What the heck is he writing about this time? Met Tommy Lee once at a Tommyland CD signing at Wal Mart. The line was wound all the way around the inside of the store! He was still very cool by the time I got there, taking it all in stride.

Toss all your Dokken albums away immediately. How many of them to you have again? 1 or 2?

I'm not talking about how many copies of LSA you have, lol!

So... not counting live or GH discs, which of the 10 studio albums do you not have a copy of? If you're missing more than one (Shadowlife, understandable), you've really cheated yourself!

Dokken (Japan self titled) is my favourite... Beast From The East is pretty cool also. Dysfunctional is a poorer cousin to Dokken... LSA is ok apart from the God-awful vocals. I have Shadowlife (utter pigeon hemeroids that one) and the first few on LP or cassette...

Don is another guy who made his own bed, destroying his voice with drugs & alcohol...but I still have a soft spot for him.

I think all the Dokken/Don Dokken albums up through and including Dysfunctional are good...my favorite is Under Lock & Key (where I discovered them). Shadow Life has a couple of songs that are decent and could be forgiven were it a Don solo album or something. After that, they're released consistently decent material, though not as fantastic as albums 2,3 & 4. I was pleasantly surprised by LSA, but Don did sound a little thin.

I've been curious about this... I didn't even know about the S/T Japanese release until you mentioned it once, and wasn't it basically the same (or contained many of the same songs) as Dysfunctional? Where I can I find one?

Don is the first rock vocalist who has transcended the need to sing. He's simply metamorphasized into something else entirely, about 10 steps up on the evolutionary scale. We just can't understand it, because he's way ahead of his time. Don could kick ass with both feet tied behind his back.

Just found a single copy is supposedly very good condition on eBay, and snagged it up. Looking forward to it!

Here's what you goofballs missed the other night -- total awesomeness. Check out my man Don in all his glory! Looks like the freakin' second coming of You-Know-Who if you ask me. And whoever this dude with the hands is... you're about 6 inches shy of the truth, Pal!

Just received it last week and it was in new condition. Excellent packaging and booklet with lots of pics, too. But the mix of the songs is HORRIBLE, lol! No wonder they made them re-record them for Dysfuctional. I cranked it in on two diff stereos with the same results... The drum and bass are way in the front, at many times with Don's vocals buried in the mix. The worst was in the first track - verse 1 kicks in and I can barely hear Don and can't even make out the words - sounds almost like he's only coming out of the right channel, as if the center channel is missing or something. The chorus is more prominent, and the rest of the songs are more acceptable. But there is definitely something not right with track one.

No wonder I love it so much!!!!!!!

That's the point - it's a raw, rougher mix....and works great for me. The US release was too slick.

Dude, Dysfunctional wasnt slick at all, but the production was more professional. I'm totally fine with a rawer sound, as long as it's at least mixed properly, and there is no way this one passes muster. Another example on "Nothing Left to Say", where the vocal should go "We were lost...", it comes in awkwardly with "lost" preceded what sounds like the chopped off last millisecond of "were". I don't know man, I'm not a studio engineer but to my ears this album sounds rushed and very sloppily mixed. But... I love it for the collector's aspect. :)
