These days there's a bunch of effects that can be created and applied through simply a single digital device. But, before the technology existed, that particular effect was achieved usually through a distortion pedal - which is all it did. One device, one effect. When you look at the floor of the stage in front of most guitarists these days, there's just a bunch of toys, pedals, etc. for them to play with. Before RUSH went to their widespread use of overlays and pre-recorded stuff being mixed in at their live performances, I'm pretty sure Alex had the most complex, largest collection of pedals and effects devices of any band in history. Being his tech must have been an absolute nightmare!
