Giant wasn't around for much, but I loved their first album!

Just never got into Toto and I've seen them live a couple times.

Giant.....Dann Huff rules. Both of the "real" cds are very good, and Time to Burn is great! Too bad they never got the airplay. III was rejects and demos, so what do you expect? Not too keen on the new cd however, even though Terry Brock does a fine job on vox. Songs just don't measure up to the first two cds.

Toto....good stuff here and there. Lyrically poor at times.

Styx....good talent, but never really cared for the theatricality of a lot of the songs.

Mr. Big....talent there. Songs not so much.

Good point since it was your basic supergroup although I did like the music they put out. I wonder what will come out of that persistant rumor about a reunion? Right now it seems like nada!! Shaw's into Blue Grass and Blades is on the road so that leaves Nugent and I believe he is also touring this year. Oh Well!

Hard to say when DY and Giant only have 2 albums vs the other bands having a bunch. If Giant and DY kept making music they'd be at the top. Let me see then...

If I remember correctly, Giant is pretty close to Toto in that a bunch of session players decided to form a band. Dann Huff is just a monster on guitar--and not a half-bad singer either.

Toto, to me, suffers from that same illness that bothers Mr. Big.....great musicians, horrible songs. Granted, I haven't heard anything Toto since the mid-80s, but that time(and before) would be their classic period....I can't imagine them getting 'better'. I still don't hear the guitar wizardry that people clamor about from Lukather. But I'm sure his solo stuff flushes that out....and the rest of the band sound like 'session' musicians....what am I missing here? Is Roseanna still Holding the Line down in Africa?

If they had someone who really cared about quality lyrics, they might be higher in rankings--does anyone really know what Africa is about??? I generally like Isolation, Kingdom of Desire, and The Seventh One has some really good stuff. Beyond that, it's patchy with a song here and a song there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2rwuFshWnE : This is what I show people who want to know what Luke's all about. If that doesn't do anything for you, then you just don't dig his style. He is a monster though, the tons of people who have had him session on their albums can't all be wrong.

Toto, unlike Journey, is a far better album band and the deeper album cuts are far better. I can, however, see how someone would not latch on to Toto because they had about 8 million lead singers. That really hurts the continuity and recognition factors, especially when their sound varied so much from song to song as is.

I'm with you on Mr. Big though. I haven't heard anything that does anything for me from them.

Matt, I watched about 4 mins of that video, and had to shut it off. I can't sit and listen to a guy just bend strings for 10+ minutes....I'm glad you enjoy him. It's nice to have musicians that move you....Sadly, Steve is not that musician for me....

To me, a true testament of a great guitarist is not wanking on guitar for a few minutes, haphazardly bending strings, and making sex faces....the true test is incorporating an emotional solo within the framework of a song....like Who's Crying Now. Although I'm not a huge Journey fan(by standards here) I appreciate some things by the band....and that solo makes me feel. Anybody can bend strings....no?
