I Love Microsoft Mesh!

There – I said it. Though I also am having a small affair with Dropbox.

So Mesh is a service that allows you to sync folders from computer to computer (as well as the cloud). For example, I have folders sync between my laptop and desktop. So no matter which computer is in front of me, I can access the files I need. It keeps a version on both machines and updates to whichever one is newer – all automatically. But by having a local copy, I can work on things even if I am not connected to the internet (it syncs once connected).

I can sync multiple folders in any location (something Dropbox does not allow) and even sync without having a copy in the cloud. I can also sync folders with people I invite and also have Mesh. I have shared folders with my parents, daughter, and siblings so we can drop large volumes of photos in and they appear on each of our machines within minutes. My friend and I share music and movies as well.

Of course, my folders that I sync to the cloud can be accessed by me from any computer with an internet connection. For example, I bought an e-book today that was 50 megabytes. I wanted to get it onto our work server (which does not have Mesh installed). So I logged in, went to my Mesh online and copied it from my Mesh folder.

The reason I use Dropbox at times is due to one feature Mesh does not have – the ability to send a link to a file for others to download. Dropbox has far better integration with the iPad, though I do have a couple apps that can get to my Mesh folder without using the browser.

There are a ton of new cloud services and I am curious what any of you use as a solution.

probably nothing.

mesh syncs data across the cloud before the cloud was a pussy wisp of smoke.

one of the early beta testers sits across from me and i remember how proud he was of this.

i see why now.

I've just installed Dropbox at my computer at school so I'm still playing around with it and what not. Have to see what Mesh has to offer.

The main differences between Dropbox and Mesh - Mesh offers 5 gig free VS Drop Box's 2 gigs. However, Dropbox allows you to purchase more space (kinda pricey) and Mesh does not. With Mesh, you sync any folder. With Dropbox, the folders have to be under one main folder. Not sure about Dropbox, but with Mesh you can sync folders across computers without choosing to use the cloud space allowance. For example, if I share a movie with my friend, I send it straight from my machine to his and choose not to store that in the cloud. The only files I keep in the cloud are ones that i think I'll need to access elsewhere or ones that are important enough to justify the space usage.

Mesh integrates with Skydrive, another Windows Live product. Skydrive allows 25 gigs of cloud storage. It's rather annoying that MS doesn't allow Mesh access to the full 25 gigs.

I really wish Mesh allowed the sending of links to download files. Dropbox allows it. It's the one drawback of Mesh. And they need a native iPad app.

Amazon has their cloud storage/player out now and Apple will soon have theirs. So we'll see how things shake up.
