Looking for a laptop and have a 5-6 hundred dollar budget. It will be used almost exclusively fir online poker, e-mail and basic web surfing. What's my best bet?

Make sure it's got an Intel chip and at least 4GB of ram, no less than 320GB of storage. Decent sound chip. HDMI out. Long battery life.
Look for Best Buy specials. There should be something within that price range. If you have enough left over buy a removable hard drive too.

Check this laptop out Dan.

My one reservation about buying online is if something goes wrong, you can't just take it back to the store, you have to ship it.

Normally I would suggest ASUS, as they have, or at least had at my last checking, the best consumer ratings. But the laptop I linked had 5 stars on Newegg, so I felt confident suggesting it.

It's probably alright, Rick. I just prefer to buy something where if it fucks up I can hand carry it in and say fix it or replace it.

Me too, for sure. I built a desktop computer from Newegg and Tiger Direct a few years ago. I had two issues that I had to resolve by shipping the shit back and waiting for the new parts, and I think the whole ordeal took a bit more than two weeks. The delay was very frustrating.

I still say Tablet if all your doing is fooling around online. If it's not for serious processing, why bother carrying around a bigger size machine? I love my laptop for all the things I do - work wise, etc. But for just playing some games, browsing the net, reading, and general time-wasting, the tablet is perfect. So much more portable. Not to mention it would be far easier to listen to music or other media. Just my 2 cents.

NewEgg is what we use at work if we can't find it across the street at Frys. No issues with returns or anything. A solid vendor.

That's why I bought mine online directly from the manufacturer. My laptop crashed three months after I bought it and all I had to do was call Dell and they sent I guy right to my house to replace the hard drive, motherboard and CD/DVD drive.

Fact Finder wrote:BTW, we got ours through Newegg but in looking at their page they don't have this model right now. However Amazon.com does have it and you can learn alot about the machine here...the reviews read like something we might write about this product.

The memory upgrade is only $22.

A friend of mine bought an Acer laptop. It's a really nice looking one, and they're very happy with it.

i see a few don't care for HP/Compaq and i'll follow up on the Compaq side but HP is usually rock solid. i've got a personal and a work one that are just fine.

if you gave me a dell i'd not take the time to whiz on it.

acer, gateway and laptops like this are ok but in the end you do get what you pay for. i've owned both of these in my time and neither stand out as something i'd get again.

asus is hit or miss and not much in between for me.

for $400 i recently got one of my DJ's a refurbished toshiba laptop w/4 gig of ram and a 500 gig drive with a 17.3" screen. i'm not a huge toshiba fan but they're pretty good. how's that for a ringing endorsement.

if i were out to buy one today, i'd look at a sony, but the $600 may keep sony from you.

in the end, for all you're going to do any of them will likely be fine. if the 3 year warranty isn't a killer, get it. i seldom get warranties because i'll buy a new one in a year or two anyway.

http://www.microcenter.com - if you have one of these around you, see what they have on sale.
