Billy Idol Covers 'Jump'

Postby JRNYMAN » Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:40 pm

Was checking out some recent live performances of a bunch of the bands from the 80's and came across a concert DVD of Billy Idol show titled 'In Super Overdrive Live' from 2009 performed at the congress theater in Chicago. I have to say that son-of-a-bitch has lost nothing in the way of his physique as well as his ability to belt out the songs that were iconic back in the day. And Steve Stevens is just freaking wizard-like on the guitar - so effortless and fluid. (He's like a cross between Page, Yngwie and Randy Rhodes if that makes sense. He's very technical yet his way of handling and playing the guitar is so smooth and gentle.)

Anyway, one of the songs in the set list from that show is Jump and I gotta tell ya.... he fucking nails it as does Stevens. It's probably the best cover I've ever heard of that song - they do it THAT good. If you were ever a Billy Idol fan the DVD is definitely worth checking out. He delivers every song flawlessly and remains true to the studio version most of the time.
Drummer Brian Tichy (Pride & Glory, Gilby Clarke) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Alice Cooper, Dream Theater) and bassist Stephen McGrath round out the rest of the band. I'm not familiar with the drummer but he made me sit up and take notice. The guy's got some serious chops! And of course Derek Sherinian on keys is always a good thing. He has his keyboards setup and positioned the same way as Tuomas Holopainen (NightWish)... they're sorta tilted toward the ground rather than being level. As a keyboard player myself, I don't see any benefit whatsoever to setting them up this way. I guess it's purely aesthetics.

Anyway, here's Jump:

In contrast to maybe the best cover of Jump ever, here's possibly the worst cover ever - and DLR is singing it! However, he's singing it (sorta) with the Boston Pops playing it. The performance is apparently from 2007 although I honestly have no idea when it's from. It's just bad!

Is that the bluegrass one? I'm not clicking on that if it is! He showed up on Conan or Leno or one of those with that piece of crap a few years back. '07 sounds about right. Bloody awful.

Nope. It's at some Hollywood Bowl-looking venue on either the 4th of July or Memorial day or something like that because there's tons of military personnel in the audience. This performance makes the bluegrass one look Grammy-worthy!

Billy Idol had one of the funniest "Behind the Music" shows on VH! ever! That dude would be slaying women right in his own bedroom with his wife home. Sitting by the pool the wife heard them thru the baby monitor that was left on in the bedroom. There are many funny moments in this BTM, you gotta check it out if you have the time.

Brian Tichy was the drummer for Foreigner for a while (2009-2010) and now is with Whitesnake. Saw him live with Foreigner and will be seeing him this summer with Whitesnake. He does have some serious chops. Does a crazy drum solo playing with his bare hands and fists. He's a pretty talented guy. Think he plays guitar as well.

Can you imagine the stories that would be included in his autobiography? And even if a story was so out there and included small rodents found on the tiniest island on the planet, Bigfoot, a tuba, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders - all of them, and a one-armed dwarf named Morty from Tarzana, you wouldn't doubt a single word of it!  Yup, have to agree with you Andrew, he's had a fun, interesting life.

Watched it last night. Gotta respect the fact that he makes no excuses for nor does e try to hide how much of a slut he is/was!  I had forgotten about his motorcycle accident. I remember that vividly. The absence of the internet, TMZ, etc. made for a lot of conflicting stories. The first news report I heard was that he had dies. Then they updated the story and said he was still alive but just barely. He was so friggin' popular at that particular time so the incident was a huge news piece for quite a while.

Watching that video of Dave - I was reminded of a conversation with someone close to the band (at the time anyway) - Dave is totally pulling the 'Vegas' act...

The mix on that performance is pretty aweful - but it's an interesting performance...shame Dave hasn't decided go bald all the way...

And as for the Billy Idol version, I thought it was actually really good...Billy's got a great band there - just not sure I could stand to listen to an entire set of Billy Idol (aka the personified erection) material

LMAO, speaking of DLR, I pulled up some old DLR vids cuz I want to check out Billy's playing back in his DLR days, and I swear I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard at this video, nowadays. Have to say.......I will never tease my daughter for her music video choices ever again. Seriously can't watch DLR in this vid with a straight face. Try it.

My very religious mother who was already a firm believer that rock music was created by Satan, decided that the future of mankind as well as everything that was holy and decent had been abandoned after learning about and subsequently seeing pictures/video of Diamond Dave. She even went so as to call him (and I swear I'm not making this up...) one of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse!  One thing he'll never be accused of is having low self esteem. He was a beeeee-u-teeful man wasn't he?    Ass-less pants... CLASSIC DAVE!

And you're right. Nothing he did on or off stage was any worse than what you see in today's ...... ahem..... "music videos" <------ yeah right! Remember when MTV was the acronym for MUSIC TELEVISION?
