Saw Green Lantern Sunday night and am pissed as hell that I actually thought it would be even above average.

Further proof that the Marvel Universe is the NFL and the DC Universe is the Canadian League.

Anyone else see it?

Oh fuck me sideways was that ever a dire movie. I saw it the other day. To make a Journey comparison, imagine if Journey were on the way to a concert, had their flight delayed, and the concert venue picked five monotone drunk guys from the front of the row as replacements and gave them broken instruments to play. That is like the green lantern.

How can you say that when it's under the DC umbrella that produced possibly the biggest two comic book super-hero movies of ALL time in the modern era (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight)?

To give DC credit, Green Lantern is one of those hero's that they are trying to push within the comic world but the casual movie-goer has NO fucking clue who Hal Jordan even is. Other than that, I enjoyed the flick but expected a little more in terms of story but at the same time, kept things simple to actually understand the brief origin of Green Lantern.

Thing that was so-so was the goofy-ness in most parts. I know they wanted to go opposite direction of the grungy Dark Knight but honestly, Green Lantern just seemed like Ryan Reynolds in a Green Lantern outfit. He never became THE GREEN LANTERN like Christopher Reeve was SUPERMAN.

Overall 7/10 (huge under-achievement) for me but it could have been better and more serious.

Because Marvel is turning out hit after hit esp. when they have full control. Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, have all been great (IM2 not so much, still passable though) Plus Cap coming in July and then everyone getting together in the Avengers next summer.

X-Men First Class was outstanding as well!!!! The scene with Erik in the pub was truly a badass moment!!!

There hasn't been a decent Superman movie since SM2 in what 1980? I think the best Batman was Burton's '89 version. I fell asleep during TDK when I saw it in the theater. Just recently bought the blu-ray for $5 and gave it a watch a couple of months ago. All the twists and turns and the Joker pulling fast ones over everyone constantly (including prancing around a hospital dressed as a nurse) I thought it was terribly over-rated. Anyway DC has maybe 2 bankable characters (after Superman Returns that may be pushing it)

Marvel = NFL
DC = CFL if not the XFL

I saw it and was somewhat disappointed. First, it was slow as hell getting off the ground. Second, much of the Green Lantern action didn't seem that cool until he went into action on Earth. The rest just seemed rushed and without much point. Nothing to really draw you into the characters, or care much about anything else. Maybe the premise of the character, the concept of the green and yellow energies, etc. are almost too hokey to translate well on screen. I do think GL would be great in a Justice League movie where he can just add to the mix and do his thing, but not sure he's really the best material for carrying a franchise.

They really need to do a Justice League vs. Legion of Doom live action film....but do it GOOD. No cheesy shit. No Zan and Jana. No Gleek. A Mr. Mxyzlptlk character villian would be awesome. Show Bizarro World. I'd dig a movie like that....

DC has some legal issues they need to iron out with some of their characters but as far as the cinema, they rarely have anybody outside of the big 3 (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) that are worthy of their own franchise (the Flash should be badass) and DC seems to ride the big 3's coattails and the success that they've brought in since their existence.

Marvel has a plethora of wide-known characters that can relate to the public with more media appeal. Spiderman movies have come and gone as well as a magnitude of X-men movies. The Avengers as a team has brought a lot of interest so movies like Thor, Captain America, The Hulk (which was already tried TWICE and bombed) and Iron Man are more well-known house-hold names than say, Green Lantern so I'm not too surprised how DC handled Green Lantern, esp being in legal battles over other characters like Superman. If DC can hit an upper-cut with The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel and the Flash movie set to be out, then they'd be right back in the mix and hopefully be on track to see a Wonder Woman in our life-time haha.

7/10 is about where I'm at. Maybe 7.5. The movie isn't that bad. The problem with the movie is the script.

Here's a spoiler, so if you haven't seen it, and plan to, back out of the thread now.

The original finale involved GL fighting Hector Hammond on Earth before heading back to Oa to join the Corps in the battle against Parallax, aka Legion before the name change.

I don't know if they ran out of money or what, but that would have been a far more satisfying third act. I also didn't buy the Guardians and the Corps letting Hal go it alone to save Earth. That was really bad writing.

Some of the CGI could've been improved, too. And we didn't get to "meet" enough of the Corps members.

Also, while Reynolds did a pretty decent job as Hal/GL, I think he was upstaged by Peter Sarsgaard (Hammond) and Mark Strong's Sinestro. Strong as Sinestro was just amazing. He had so much screen presence. If they make the second movie (and it's 50/50), it'll be FAR better because it'll get to the nitty gritty and give us Hal vs. Sinestro. The makeup job on Strong was very impressive. Strong IS Sinestro.

I'm sick of X-shit and mutants. I didn't see XFC and don't plan to. And the X-Men movies were all fucked up. The way they handled the team and the Dark Phoenix storyline was a joke. They didn't do those movies right. Bryan Singer sucks, too (as he proved again with Superman Returns).

It's good for 1989. It draws too much on the '60s Batman show to be taken seriously nowadays. Michael Keaten is a great actor (I'm a fan) but he was a better Batman than a Bruce Wayne because he lacks the arrogance to do the character justice. Bale doesn't.

All you're telling us is that you couldn't follow the movie and you like your movies to be straightforward x + y = z type flicks where everything is laid out like connect-the-dots.

Christopher Nolan finally portrayed Batman the way he's supposed to be. TDK's total gross to date is in excess of one billion dollars. One BILLION. Can't wait for the third movie.

Trailers have looked pretty good and I have faith in the director, Martin Campbell, (Zorro, Goldeneye, Casino Royale). Gotta catch a matinee of this. I'm surprised it's recieved such a lukewarm response. I recently saw the new X-Men and, while it's got a great retro vibe, I found it somewhat flat and uninvolving. Better than X3 tho.

However, the next day, Warner Bros sources painted a different picture, which is of a studio struggling to balance the reality of low box office with plans for future movies that have been loosely in the works for a while now. The question appears to be whether a Green Lantern 2 can be made on a lower budget that would not then set the box office expectations so high. Of course, Green Lantern wasn't just a box office failure, but a critical one as well. There may be bright news on that front, however, as it has recently been revealed that there may be a director's cut of Green Lantern which is drastically different from the "studio cut" that was actually released. One has to wonder if perhaps Warner Bros could release the Martin Campbell Director's Cut on DVD and Blu Ray, in the hopes of changing the public's (and the critics') opinion about the very idea of a Green Lantern film franchise. I've seen it theorized that the sequel announcement was a last-ditch attempt to get people to see the film before Transformers destroyed any chance of the thing making money. I'm still amazed that a studio approved the budget for that film considering how unknown the character is to the general non-comic book-reading population. Heads will likely roll in the end.

I saw it, and thought it was ok. Better than the new X-men and on the same level as Thor.
They tried to do to much and have a personality to the film too. But it is an orgin story, and should have been more on that and less on this huge threat. Baby steps. They tired to start off running and fell.

But I will buy it when it comes out, as far a overall Superhero movies, I would put it in the top 2/3.

I liked the movie, but felt it jumped all over the place in terms of story. I also thought the killing of the evil dude was way too easy... :lol:

I use to collect comics up untill when Katrina got most of my collection. I was more DC fan than Marvel. For years DC's movies were better, now it seems to be swinging the other way.
But for Green LAntern, if your not a comic book fan, you really don't know who he is. Same with Thor. We all know Xmen, Superman, Spiderman, BAtman, Wonder Woman, Hulk, and Ironman. But these lesser known heroes movies have suffered some, because they are trying to jump into a huge story, instead of buliding them up. So they are doomed to fail and not be 300+ movies. Hulk even though he is know, was true to the comic, but not the tv show, and if did less at the box office because of that.
