Philadelphia To Ban Texting While Walking

Dopey Philly fucks! Surely, the people of Philadelphia have way too much time on their hands. As much as texting annoys me, if some dumb fuck gets hit by a city bus because he's texting the babysitter, ahem, his wife, fuck him

Yeah, let's just take all risk out of life and ban everything that could be remotely dangerous, unhealthy, etc. What a bunch of f'ing sissies.

I'm against seatbelt laws also. That being said, I ALWAYS wear mine when I get into a vehicle.

Seriously? Do folks in the USA really hate being told to do anything? That said....seat belt law or not - it's common bloody sense ain't it? :)

Just curious my old mate...I like hearing of contrasts between different societies.

They did this a few months ago in Rexburg, Idaho...a town just about 40 minutes north of me....but they haven't banned texting and driving yet.

Leave it to a state that puts "famous potatoes" on their license plate to find texting while walking more egregious than texting while driving! On another note, I would expect it a whole lot more from some back woods town than a major metropolitan city.

Leave it to the state that has "fans" that assault Santa Claus and sports stadiums with their own jail cells and magistrates...

I LOVE my state! And it wasn't the state, it was the city...and that city is messed up but not backwoods.

Well, you left out the part of my comment that was the most important, that I ALWAYS wear my belt regardless of the law.

And, yes, it is bloody common sense and that should be the impetus behind wearing one in the first place, not because some nanny state rule says so. In my opinion, if someone doesn't wear a belt, it shouldn't be against the law but their insurance company should have every right to deny payment to them and also inflict damages on them for any other parties involved in the accident.

I'm against the seat belt law also. Like you, I wear mine every time I drive. I didn't before it became law, but now I wouldn't think of not wearing it. I'm not sure if it's nation-wide, but in Texas and Oklahoma, it's the law that you must wear a seat belt, but you don't have to wear a helmet to ride a motorcycle. That, to me, is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard of.

Interestingly enough, 49 of the 50 U.S. states have a seatbealt law. New Hampshre remains the lone dissenter. Then again, you can't really expect much else from a state that puts "Live Free or Die" directly on every license plate.

This coming from a man that's obsessed with license plates.....

I can assure you that license plates aren't anything I'm "obsessed" with. I simply refuse to take any state seriously that brags about potatoes on its license plate! Truth be told, I'd like to ban all sayings on every license plate. If you live in Idaho, you know all about the sucky potato, and if you live in Pennsylvania, there's a really good shot that you've met a "friend" or two over the decades!

You sure know a lot about license plates for not being "obsessed" with them.

Unconstitutional and no way to enforce it. "Prove I was texting while I was walking officer. Oh you can't??? FUCK OFF" and yes you can tell a police officer to fuck off...and if he/she arrests you you will make a mint in court. Happened a number of times here in PA.

Fuckin' nanny state bullshit.

Might be in the minority, but I agree with the seat belt law. Why should someone else in the car who IS wearing a seatbelt, not to mention babies and toddlers in car seats, other children, etc., be injured by the non-seatbelt-wearing person's body when it becomes a huge projectile in an accident? Many people have been killed that way.

Driving a car is similar to owning a gun, they're both weapons.
Some people just have to be told ...hey, you know you can't
just go on a killing spree w/this, right?!?
Protect your children,
don't text and drive, don't drink and drive, pay attention to what
you are doing, don't aim that thing at innocent people. You can own it,
just do it responsibly.
I'm for most laws that will try to protect us from idiots.
The texting and walking thing ...are innocent people being hurt?!?

Not going to happen. It was an overzellous CBS reporter who didn't do any checking before reporting this. Mayor Nutter and his people have gone on record in the last 24 hours or so saying it isn't going to happen.

Thing is though, if one guy is not wearing a belt and he gets thrown from his vehicle, yeah it's his own dumb fault, but if he is thrown from the vehicle and he impacts with the vehicle or people he collided with, and causes harm, or at least *more harm* to the other party, then they become affected too. There was a report on the news (locally) awhile back of an accident where this happened... someone was ejected and went slamming into another car's windshield. It was a high speed thing, on the tollway, I believe.

As far as walking and texting... that's a little much, but the humorous side of me would love a law like that, because I'm sick to death of having to dodge around people in stores and parking lots and everywhere else because they just HAVE to stop RIGHT there in the middle of whatever to answer a text instead of god forbid moving over out of peoples' way or *GASP* waiting 5 minutes to reply. And yeah, if you're in a parking lot or crossing a street and you get hurt because you just can't wait a minute to reply, then screw you. But I don't know that there needs to be a law over it. It's common sense.

the law i love is you have to wear you seatbelt in Florida, but riding down the freeway at 75 with your truck bed full of people is perfectly fine.

In FL the seatbelt law only applies to front seat passengers and babies/toddlers/children being restrained properly in the back seat, otherwise back seat riders do not have to wear a seatbelt by law. And the riding in the bed of a truck is legal too if they are on the floor of the bed. Extremely dumb of course, but that's the way it is unfortunately.

I agree with seatbelt and helmet laws.
If some moron chooses not to wear his/her seatbelt or helmet and gets injured, and then they can't pay their medical bills, guess who ends up paying for it in the long run.... yep, the rest of us, and healthcare costs rise yet again.

That's true. There's a much bigger picture than simply whining that it's more government intervention. It is simply to protect us. Like what others have stated, if you get launched into the air, you become a weapon. Now, with that said, I don't personally need a law telling me that it's safer for me to use my seat belt than to not use it. It's common sense, but you would be surprise how many people refuse to wear it despite the law being in place. Personally, I don't put my car in drive until everyone riding with me is buckled in.

That would happen regardless of there being a law or not.
