Superman's being indestructible (except for Kryptonite) is his biggest flaw as a comic book character. Always thought that was lame. Other guys you actually had to worry about their well being thru their mortality.

Cavill doesn't resemble Supes/Clark in the slightest. More like Captain Marvel. Sha-zam!!

Wasn't Captain Marvel the guy who truly tested Superman's limits because his powers are magically derived?

Sounds like Thor would be in the same boat.

Amen.
Did anyone have to endure the Heath Ledger fanboy contagion unleashed by The Dark Knight?

Superman Returns wasn't a re-make. It was a sequel from Superman II, which was the problem. Bryan Singer instilled an 80's type character to a 2006 genre and those mixes truly was an abortion of epic proportions. This new Super-remake is actually going to see something we've never seen of the Man of Steel before--EVER. He's going to be more vicious and suited for a more modern audience which means more action and serious than what is expected from the character.

To be honest I couldn't give 2 shits about Superman or most of these other lame ass movies re-treding the boards. All these movies are trying to out do each other in "darkness" and "mood" and blah blah blah...

Superman and Captain Marvel are much of more the same. The character of Billy Batson was made to reconcile with Superman so to say he doesn't resemble Superman but Captain Marvel is too funny, haha.

Besides, Cavill walked right out of a Superman comic-book.

I sincerely hope Superman isn't "vicious." That's the antithesis to his character. He definitely needs to remain much brighter in look and spirit than Batman or the Punisher.

That's why I'll be going to see Cowboys and Aliens. My two favorite movie genres sci fi & westerns starring Indiana Jones & James Bond. Can't miss! 8)

Vicious as far as Superman. He'll take action at a much higher risk. Superman the character won't be brooding like Batman, but what will be going on around him will be much more darker to a sometimes florescent character. Going to make for an interesting screening.

Tell me about it. It doesn't matter whether you have an 80s character or a 90s character or a 60s character. They key point is that you have to get your audience to connect emotionally to the material. If your audience cares about the characters on screen, you can get away with a lot. There is no reason than an 80s type character (whatever that is) wouldn't work, but the audience rejected the idea of the last attempt on screen. You don't have to be dark and dreary. You just have to find the emotional core, and word of mouth will take it from there. The opening will be big regardless from the fanboys, but word of mouth is what will give you a monster hit versus something that may not even earn its budget back.

Considering Zack Snyder's previous movies, I'm not holding out much hope for this one honestly. It will look pretty, but will be emotionally cold.

That wasn't necessarily the problem. The problems were:

1) Bryan Singer. The guy sucks ass as a director. Way overrated.

2) The script. It rehashed too much shit from the first two Superflicks and Supes' ultimate nemesis was...a kryptonite mountain?!

3) Most importantly...as Peter David pointed out, Superman would NEVER abandon the Earth to take an intergalactic sightseeing trip. That made no sense whatsoever.

So Brandon Routh, while he looked the part, was pretty much wasted.

Correct. It was actually the perfect storm. IMHO, it was practically everything. Noone will never, ever fill in the shoes of Reeve & everyone knows this, but yet, Singer goes out and casts a Reeve look-alike & writes a script to where half of it was already written by Richard Donner, or so it seemed. There were sometimes to where I was literally getting confused between 1978 and 2006. Routh didn't have a chance to begin with since he was asked to mimic a legend and not be his own entity or have his own influence on the character. Plus, that costume and cast was GOD-AWFUL. Don't even get me started on the super-kid.

Agreed. At first glance, he seems miscast.

Not nearly as overrated as Zack Snyder. Singer, while visually boring, at least understands how to tell story.

Zack's only overrated because his star now hangs higher than Bryan's thanks to 300 and Watchmen.

Zack impressed me with the remake of Dawn Of The Dead — and that is no small feat, because the original is one of my favorite horror films of all time. :)

Look at Singer's X-flicks...for the most part, they're kind of "meh." They're not aging well.

I'd say 300, and 300 alone. Watchmen wasn't exactly a success. Judging from the numbers, I'd be surprised if it broke even. It might have bought him some clout with the fanboys, but not with the studios. Maybe Dawn of the Dead is better, but I didn't like either of the others.

I've seen quite a few less-than-positive remarks regarding Cavill, his hair (no bang—LOL), and yes, the texture of the suit and the fake-looking "S"...

That said, the cape is good and it's still better than the costume Routh wore. And I believe Cavill is not wearing the famous red trunks, though you can't really tell from the photo.

I'm not much of a comic reader, but I know enough about Superman to understand that his optimism and general idealism are integral to his character. I don't mind making him morally fallible (heroes who don't slip up aren't interesting), but I hope Nolan and co. don't succumb to the emo-drenched masses and indulge this overused trope.
