UFO, Asia, and Marillion also on this show according to the phone call I just got from my brother.

Good lineup, Foreigner sounded good, but Joe Bonamassa will blow them all away. Did you just see him play? Unbelievable!

Joe was great. I was surprised to see Magnum on the bill. An old favorite of mine.

I was enjoying this until ELP came on. Never a fan. I like prog rock but they were always too pompous, plus now Greg Lake looks like he ate Rosie O'Donnell.

Just a bunch of hot air.

Got it scheduled to record later. Magnum live on tv in the US is just bizarre--not that I'm complaining, mind you!

fyi, despite being roughly the same age (if not a couple of years older), Bob Catley lists Perry as a major vocal influence.

That's bizarre, because Magnum-Catley had already recorded their best material when Journey went "mega" with Perry as frontman.

nah....Storytellers Night is where the best stuff started, even though I like the material on Chase the Dragon a lot also. You did hear a bit of a change vocally in Catley starting around Chase the Dragon, and becoming really pronounced after Storyteller's.

Storytellers (and on down) is all just so...goofy.

I figured as much judging from the previous response. Magnum was certainly a different band after Magnum II, and they went more commercial as time went on. I would say a much better band, but that's just me. I"m guessing Changes isn't your favorite song on that album, right? That one certainly foreshadows the pop rock path.

I'd rank Storytellers, Wings of Heaven and Vigilante for that matter over ANY Journey album. Just some brilliant songwriting on those albums.

Magnum > Journey, certainly. That also goes for a lot of other bands that have moved in and out of the "AOR-prog" arena, like Saga, Marillion and (early) Foreigner. 'Cept I haven't found anything to like of Marillion's for years.

well, you are unique, at least. Not my favorite, but not my least favorite either.

One thing I can respect Magnum for is their absolute refusal to become a nostalgia act, even if it means dragging the fans along kicking and screaming. Of course, getting them to play anything pre-CTD other than Changes and Kingdom of Madness tends to annoy a bunch of fans also, which they seem steadfast against also.

Ive never warmed to Marillion in any era. I should love them, but it always seems to leave me cold or on the self-indulgent side.

I always liked ELP back in the day, but this kind of overindulgent display is way over the top.
