Leppard has completely FAKE backing vox.

Deano and I saw their soundcheck in 2006. No one on stage but lush vocals playing.

Ann Wilson has amazing pipes. A truly legendary vocalist. I can't stand Lippard though.

How in the fuck did Heart take a back seat to Lippard this year?

And, for all that's holy, I can't understand how Journey has higher sales numbers than Heart!

Ann and Nancy Wilson are the queens of my musical heart.

Def Leppard headlined Download two years ago. Their tours are always in the Top 20 for the year.
Heart on the other hand usually is relegated to playing fairs for ten bucks a head when they aren't opening for someone.

It's simply economics.

Not a Heart fan? Heart is a terribly underrated act. Have you seen them live?
They have a great catalog too.

Def Leppard has sucked since the '80s ended. Why BOC has to play casinos and Lepp headlines ANY fest is beyond me.

I've sen Heart a half dozen times but that wasn't your question. Def Leppard is the bigger act and sells tickets.

Q: Why is it that there aren't more women in rock?

A: I think part of the reason is that in order to be in rock, you really have to sacrifice a lot ... It's very hard to make this much sacrifice ... It's very hard on relationships. Then there's the whole image of hypersexuality thing, which women in rock have yet to sort out. Rock is something that women have to recreate in their own image, and it takes a while.

Q: I hope we'll see more of that.

A: Me, too, and I hope we'll hear less Auto-Tune, because, I mean, this isn't even on a philosophical level, I think Auto-Tune makes women's voices sound more shrill, and so when you get up there, it's kind of irritating [laughs]. Maybe that's why there aren't more women in rock. It kind of makes people's voices sound more anonymous, so everybody sounds the same.

Q: So you're saying we're not going to hear Auto-Tune on a Heart record?

A: [laughs] Aww, too bad. I was just dying to reach into my soul and sing a vocal and then have somebody put Auto-Tune all over it so you can't tell it's me.

.. kudos to Ann for that response....

That's all that needs to be said!

And by the way, saying Leppard has sucked since the end of the 80's is showing you haven't a clue or just wouldn't know a good tune if one blew up your ass.

And by the way, Journey has sucked since Steve Perry hit the high road.

And Heart takes a backseat to Leppard the same way Journey did and they learn to like it!

If you went by airtime alone, it certainly would seem that way. I hear Heart played on more stations and more frequently than Journey by far.

OF all the bands I've seen live, Heart stands out as one of the tightest groups, both vocally and musically. Their overall sound is usually flawless and I've yet to hear Ann miss a note or have to go for the safe note - and I've seen them 6 times! Perhaps their most impressive performance was during the Brigade tour. They opened with "Fallen From Grace" which starts out with a nearly acapella 4-part harmony. They nailed it every bit as polished as the studio version. It was outstanding!

Good stuff, Steve! I was listening to Heart and had seen a live show a good 6 years before Journey was even on my radar. '72, I think? My girlfriend and I would get stoned at her house and listen to Dreamboat Annie. Her parents had an unbelievable sound system. I'd hang out there all day after school, then her Dad would take me home. I wonder if her parents ever knew we had sex on their bed? Her name was Nikki and I haven't heard from her for over 35 years. :D

Don't be a pussy, you can quote me.

And if you think Leppard is so amazing, it reveals that you love vapid, colorless, cookie-cutter, by-the-numbers pansy rock, and you wouldn't know REAL music if it bent you over and plumbed your waste disposal unit!!!

My feeling exactly! Problem is, most of the former fans of these bands are really just trying to make it into handi cap parking and get to the Walmart rest room without shitting their pants. Journey fans are probably the only ones who are still continent, albeit, the panties are drier now. Still, however, we do not wait for sandy.

I love old school Lepp, but anyone who doesn't realize they peaked with Pyromania is living in a fishbowl on a shelf inside an old wooden outhouse. As far as ROCK goes, Lepp checked out long ago. As far as SAP goes, then yeah, Lepp's way up there!

Not even close, but the truth hurts doesn't it? Leppard peaked at Pyro or so you say? Hmmm, funny how Hysteria out sold it now by around only 8 million. Regardless of what you think they should be sounding like, obviously they knew what they were doing. Sure, Leppard doesn't sound like High n Dry anymore, bands evolve, move on, make a different record. It's worked for them. Slang is one of the most under rated records they've ever done, didn't sell, but has some well-written and arranged songs. Tell me, what has Journey done? Name ONE memorable song since SP left, just ONE. You can't, there aren't any. No, Neal and his ego, along with his coat tail Cain, hired a 4'2" asian to front a once good American band. Impressive, isn't it?

"Truth hurts"? — is that your cliche of choice?

Backstreet Boys and N'Sync sold a lot of albums, too. Remember, units sold does not...ah, I think it's over your head.

No Surprize wrote:Regardless of what you think they should be sounding like, obviously they knew what they were doing.

Selling out? You bet. The Lepp of HnD/Pyro would've never written shit like "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Make Love Like A Man."

Sorry, mate, it's crap.

Your point is lost to the wind. I'm not one of Journey's resident defenders. Check with Rip for that, he seems to go to twelve of their shows a year. If you want to look at a band whose sound has "evolved" and whose musical output has remained relatively consistent (factoring in a couple ups and downs) and is NOT considered a "nostalgia act"...the obvious answer is Rush.

While Lippard have done a few good songs since "Hysteria", their output pretty much blows for the most part. While Heart may not be the big draw the Lippard is, you have to respect them for keeping it clean and doing real vocals instead of that horrible autotune crap that can make just about anyone sound halfway decent.

The first time I saw them (4 years ago), I caught Joe lipping 6 times. It was terrible. :? I only caught it a couple of times the second concert I saw (which I think was later that same year). Sometimes I HATE being a musician. I miss the days when I was oblivious to stuff like that. I saw Cirque De Solei qith my wife a couple of years ago, and she was like "wow... this sounds so awesome!". I was thinking "this whole fucking thing is pre-recorded" and it irritated the shit out of me. I couldn't even enjoy it.

Considering that they all learned how to record from Mutt... its not surprising that the Leps later material would continue to sound the way it has... it has become their "sound"... and Mutt was responsible for both versions of it...

And lots of things are pitch corrected, not just voices... and while you may not hear it... but it happens more often than not... there's too much money at stake for it not to be. I read in a story Mutt corrects pitch on bass guitar... and that's not a "Bad thing"... because Mutt has always been about the song, doing whatever needs to be done to communicate the song and correcting anything that takes away from that.

I frequent a few audio engineering boards and there's been lots of discussion regarding Mutt's recording techniques... one that illustrates his attention to detail best is his how he EQ's vocals... On Shania's song 'You've Got A Way' he and session engineer/mixer Mike Shipley automated the EQ on every consonant/syllable, using automated EQ on the SSL console they were mixing on. That's how that vocal sounds so natural and airy...

I've been a fan of Mutt since I was a teen... even have a framed letter from him on my wall.. as a young musician getting into engineering I wrote him, and asked how they got those huge drum sounds on Pyromania, he wrote me back from Battery Studios in London... blew my mind... Here's his studio in his Switzerland mansion... drool....
