Brand new song!!!

Postby G.I.Jim » Sun Sep 25, 2011 6:05 am

Hey everyone, hope you're having a great weekend (so far!). Here's a clip of a brand new song I just completed called "Please Remember". This is just a rough demo with some VERY rough vocals that I recorded this morning. It's no where near a finished product, but I thought it would be cool to post something new as it's been a while. I hope you like the song, and PLEASE forgive the vocals. Lol!!

Damn Dood! It must be so nice to have the resources available at your disposal to be able to create and share whenever you get the urge - I'm so jealous! Then there's guys like me who, started piano lessons 2 weeks before my 5th birthday (which makes it what...... *doing the math*...... 41 freakin' years I've been playing   ) took it seriously for a lot of years, had a pretty decent kit a few times throughout my life and find myself at 46 with a 64-key piece-of-shit Casio to "express myself artistically".

Seriously though, I like that song a lot. I listened to it twice to try and figure out what the hook was that kept grabbing me. The way you take the melody from majors and 7ths and segue into the chorus with the first chord being a minor but then immediately taking it back to majors is so unexpected and really affects the mood of the song. Good stuff! What was the inspiration for the tune, if you don't mind me asking? You may have just written it into it but I'm sensing some frustration and/or emotional pain involved there.....

On another note......

Haven't read any updates about your new 80's band. How's that coming together? Any gigs yet? Did you guys ever nail down a song list?

Band...??? Pffft! Yeah right! It's just him with some good overlays and voice sampling. :D

However, at times it sounds like Foreigner and others it's very Mike & The Mechanics-esque with just a slight hint of ELO maybe...??
Good song!

Thanks very much guys! I'm glad you liked it. When I listen back, I cringe at the vocals.  Oh well... I don't claim to be a singer. Stevo, this band would be the me, myself and freaking I band. I think this song would sound awesome with some proper vocals and some solid guitar tracks. If anyone's interested in working on it, just let me know.

JRNYMAN, I honestly wish I had taken lessons. I'd be much more diverse in my playing I think. I started playing by ear when I was 3, and with the exception of 2 or 3 lessons when I was 16, I'm completely self-taught. I can't read one note of music, and at times, it's frustrating. :?

As far as the 80's band goes... it didn't. The band rehearsed 1 time without a drummer, and it went great. We got a solid drummer for rehearsal #2 and it went AWESOME! Then for some reason, the drummer bailed before the next practice. :? I thought about trying to go the route of finding another one, but honestly just decided I didn't have time to start a band from scratch. If I could just show up and play, it would be a different story, but as it was... there was going to need to be a lot of once a week rehearsals and with my job right now I couldn't commit to it. I'll probably end up doing something at a later time with those guys though. They were good.

So that brings me to now... I'm a solo artist trying to find a singer and a guitarist. Pretty much the same place I was when I started Cold Heart over 3 1/2 years ago. I have placed a couple of ads, and have had to listen to 2 HORRIBLE auditions over the phone. Gives you new respect for Simon Cowell!

Nice to hear some vocals on it man. Love the verse progression. I still think the chorus needs some oomph. As for your voice, you actually have an awesome voice tone for this song imo. Just a little bit flat in places. Nothing a few more takes (or pitch correct) couldn't fix!

Thanks very much everyone! :D And I agree Matt. I think when someone else sings it, I'll have them sing higher in the chorus. I wrote it for that, but can't hit the notes myself.  This was just a first draft and I'm sure I'll be tweaking it big time.

Roy, I'm looking for someone with some interesting vocals. Someone who has a lower register set of pipes, but also someone who has perfect pitch and some great vibrato. It's a tall order I know, but the search continues...

I would also love to have someone with some soul and rasp in their vocals. :D

I think you just described Joe Cocker. :P For those of us who are perfect pitch challenged, what key is that in?
You mentioned earlier that you can't (or won't  ) read music and I can totally relate to that because I had one of those teachers who drilled theory and drills. I can read music, I just can't sight-read. As a result, I have a killer ear for music and can usually play something for you after hearing it just once - maybe not note for note but fairly well. That said, do you or have you ever used CakeWalk? The first time I played a board that was connected to a PC with CakeWalk running and saw what I was playing being instantly transcribed onto the music ledger on-screen, I freaked the fuck out! This was back in like '98 or thereabouts. I had never seen anything like that before and was blown away. Since then of course, like all things techno, the software does many, many more amazing things that were seemingly impossible just 5 or 10 years ago.

Thanks for the comments and the compliment! :D I couldn't agree more on the chorus. The problem with this song is that it's just out of my vocal range. It needs to be sung a litttle higher than I can get it. My vocals are never intended to be used for lead vocals, and I'll be sticking strictly with backing vocals. I know my role. :D If I ever get anyone to work on this project with, I think their higher vocals along with some HUGE backing vocals and some solid guitar tracks will mek this song sound 1000% better. I really just wanted to hear some opinions on the song itself, and you guys have made some great points. Thank you!

And Everett, if I ever join an REO coverband, I'm slitting my wrists onstage during our first performance!

Great song, Jim. I would only add a small pre-chorus section, to not immediately go from the verse to the chorus and so build the tension/dynamics up a little.
