Hazmat team called to bleach fight at Maryland Walmart

ARBUTUS, Md. — Authorities in Maryland say two women threw bleach and another chemical on each other during a fight today at a Walmart store, prompting officials to evacuate the store for nearly two hours.

A fire department spokesman said 19 people were taken to hospitals after the fight, although only one was thought to have serious injuries. That person was taken to the Wilmer Eye Institute with a potentially serious injury.

Police spokesman Shawn Vinson says one woman was arrested, and charges are pending. The woman’s name was not released. Vinson said the women involved in the fight were believed to be familiar with each other before the fight at the store in Arbutus, a suburb of Baltimore.

Fire Department spokesman Glenn Blackwell said the fight broke out on aisle 11 of the store shortly before 11 a.m. An employee told Blackwell that bleach and other cleaning supplies are kept on that aisle. Other spilled products reportedly included Pine-Sol and fabric softener.

"This is obviously not the type of behavior we would expect from people at our stores," said Walmart spokeswoman Dianna Gee, who apologized for the inconvenience to other customers.
