THE THING

Midnight showing I hope.

I already know it won't be fantastic and magnificent like the Carpenter version, but since I've been obsessed with that film since I was 13 years old or so, I'm pretty stoked about seeing it tonight. Anyone else going?

I saw the preview for that the other day and was thinking "it looks like the exact same movie".

Rental for me.

A movie would have to be pretty damn spectacular for me to go see it at midnight. And lately a lot of what Hollywood has been putting out (especially the re-boot movies) has been disappointing. Seems like nobody's able to come up with an original subject anymore. I hope, since it was a childhood obsession for you, that it lives up to your expectations. Nothing sucks more than waiting months or years for a particular movie and it ends up sucking hind tit.

I think I read where they tried to take all the insinuations from the first movie about what they thought happened to the Norwegians and make it as if the American had guessed right. I think that will make it seem even more familiar if you've watched the first one quite a few times.

My understanding is that it's not a "remake" but a "prequel," but in my opinion is that it's a fake prequel - They are doing the same story as the original under the guise of the Norwegian camp...Right down to the "thing test" - the hot wire test in the 1982 version.

So they can't possibly make it better, but I'm a Thing freak so having waited so long I'll have to get to a midnight showing....Something that I do maybe once every couple of years LOL.

One of the questions I'd like to see answered is if the thing was an intruder on the starship itself and if that's why the ship crashed to begin with.

From what I gather, it's a prequel in the same sense that Evil Dead 2 was a sequel/remake. Same story, just slightly different things. Nothing can top the Carpenter original (which was actually a remake of 1951's The Thing from Another World). Let us know how it is.

The best thing about this movie is its closing credits.

Ok, went to see this and here's my take. First off the setting of the movie was great, the cast ok, although the scientist they have there to deal with the frozen corpse is way to young to have "expert" experience. The special effects are great! The creature they conjured up was fantastic. The norwegians in the film added some humor with their profanity laden english. Now on the other side of things, it seems to me when there is a mean ass crab creature with teeth like a fucking dinosaur and tentacles like the squid who sucked down moby dick, their would be a lot more running than walking around, talking when they should be panicking and just a feeling of not enough urgency to get the fuck out of dodge. And in an Antarctica scientific base, who would have known they would have a plethora of flamethrowers and grenades? Movies are escapism from life for me. I was entertained enough for my money.

Reading Jeremey's and TNC's one-word reviews only confirms why I can't even remember the last movie I paid to see in theaters. It's just not worth it any more. I'm so consistently disappointed and pissed at being out $10-30 (depending on if I bring my GF, buy food/drink etc).

They just don't make 'em like they used to.

In particular, I find the hyped-up comedies to be underwhelming. I just watched Bridesmaids on DVD. That was, by a lot of accounts, supposed to be piss your pants funny. A few laugh-worthy moments, but overall, pretty dumb and bland. Had the same experience with Knocked Up and Hangover (though Hangover was the best of those three).
