Eye Of The Tiger, one of the best albums of all time!!!

Postby G.I.Jim » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:28 pm

I've been sitting here listening to this album tonight, and I forgot just how good it is. :D This album reminds me of growing up in Canada, skating rinks, summer nights camping, roller skating, drive-in theater, 1st kisses. Good times! They don't make albums like this anymore...

not bad, but Premonition has it beat hands down. Great little rocking album. Ever Since the World Began is a monster however, and one of Survivor's best.

Love both the Bickler and the Jamison years. Almost feel as if Survivor was two very different bands.

For me, "Premonition", "Eye of the Tiger", and "Caught in the Game" are all about equal. They raised it up a few notches, though, with "Vital Signs" and "When Seconds Count". "Too Hot to Sleep" wasn't bad, either.

THTS is my favorite.
EOTT was a great album, too, but I always have to skip the title track because it's been played to death.

Holy crap!! I normally hate covers from famous artists, but this is incredible. This is my new favorite version of this song. I don't like the cheesy sax or the drums, but the vocals are out of this world. Who would have thought Tommy would sound so good on Survivor tunes? Hell, after hearing this, I wish Tommy would leave the tribute band and just join forces with Survivor and bring back Peterik. Start working on some new originals and you have one HELL of an album!!! :D

for what it's worth, my ranking...

1. When Seconds Count
2. Premonition
3. Eye of the Tiger
4. Too Hot to Sleep
5. Vital Signs
6. Caught in the Game
7. Survivor
8. Reach

there is some amount of agreement in there, I believe... Some albums would rank higher if not for filler.

And, I remember years ago this song would be on the radio once in a while and it would always be mistaken for a Journey song. One time the DJ had to correct some caller who insisted it was a 'new' Journey song....even then it was an 'old' Survivor song.

too funny. Just wish the full version was on the radio as opposed to the massacre made when they did the radio edit and chopped out half the song. Never even knew this one every got radio airplay, as most of the pre-Vital Signs songs seemed to stay hidden gems. Still not sure how anyone ever thought Dave Bickler sounded like Perry though...

Shaw did a great job. I've had the Shaw version for 20 years or more, too, but I have always still preferred the original by Survivor.

Interestingly, back around 89 or 90, Jimi Jamison did a solo remake of it, and I think he does the best lead vocals on the song of the 3 versions.

I've even seen things in print that list EOTT as being a Journey song.

I also have a book that lists EOTT as being the #1 Heavy Metal song of all time. I can see it being listed as a Hard Rock song, but not a Heavy Metal song.

I always preferred the Survivor original. Shaw did an admirable job though. Been rather conflicted about the JJ solo version that was done for the film Lockup. Parts of it I like, and parts JJ sounds very strained. Dave Bickler could sing very high, and sometimes that was a bit outside of JJ's comfort range.

There have been a number of people over the years that have told me that they think that Bickler and Perry sound a lot a like. Their both great singers with great high range. But other than that, and the fact that they were in similar bands as each other, I can't see anyone mistaking them as being the same singer.

I never got much similarity between Bickler-era Survivor and Journey. Jamison-era (WSC and parts of Too Hot To Sleep, especially) definitely, but less with the more hard rock inclined Bickler albums, even though those went further towards the pop side of things with each subsequent album.

If you all like survivor - you would probably like Waysted's 1987 album "Heaven Tonight"

huge fan of Danny Vaughn, but, IMO, he's done much better stuff than that album... Extremely patchy, and not really sounding like Survivor--especially the Bickler era.

I'm not saying that sounds like Survivor, just saying if you are a fan it's something that Survivor fans might like.

IMO Vaughn was never better than that album. Tyketto could never match songs with Pete Way and Paul Chapman involved. I'm big on UFO though so it's a matter of preference for sure.
