The Shrinking Size of Beauty
Posted on January 13, 2012
Last night, ABC World News reported some shocking new statistics regarding today’s supermodel.
Twenty years ago, super models weighed 8% less than the average woman, today, they weigh 23% less!

To give a point a reference, top models of the past, like Christie Brinkley, Cindy Crawford, and Beverly Johnson,
would be considered plus-size models today.
The news program showed images from a recent photo shoot of an average sized woman posing with the averaged size super model of today.
The differences were striking.
It looks like the body of a beautiful grown woman posing with a young girl, perhaps her 12-year-old daughter.
When did having the body of a child become the new beauty standard for adult women?
More importantly, why?
Many women reject this ridiculous beauty standard and plus-size models are stepping in as the new role models for women.
I hope to see more media outlets bringing attention to this issue, informing the next generation of women who are growing up surrounded by unrealistic body standards, what the true meaning of beauty is.
“I firmly believe that what makes you sexy and beautiful is not the size of your body or the colour lipstick you have on.
What really makes you sexy is what you project, your confidence, and your self-awareness, having a great sense of humour and being really smart.”
– Kate Dillon, plus-size model
P.S. Thanks Katie, for bringing this newscast to my attention!
