TRAG took our Sony Digital Recorder out for a "Test Drive". (Thanks, Santa.... 8) )

This thing is amazing - approx. the size of a "3 Musketeers" candy bar, but with full, clear Stereo Sound.
Recorded during our Thursday Night Rehearsal - 01.19.12

"Energy Remains" - from our "Catch The Storm" CD

Are you sure you were all playing the same song? Is that a guitar I can hear or someone's chair creaking?

Take it as constructive criticism or whatever but it doesn't sound very good. Maybe it's the equipment, maybe not.
Now, before someone post's telling me upload myself singing, I will say no because that it is not my profession. If you want me to demo some snappy spreadsheets or power point presentations then I will oblige you.

I just don't think it's fair to the artist if people keep telling them something is great when it clearly isn't. How can you improve if everyone keeps blowing smoke up your ass?

The drum sound is just not right, the snap is just too heavy. Also, the vocal is so far down where when you first hear it, it sounds like a guy singing though, for all I know, both things may be easy fixes.

How bout some of those spread sheets Don? I personally liked it. If I didn't I would not have said so. I think for the most part it was hard to hear. Maybe something technical but since I have the actual CD she sent me I know how good that sounds. No smoke, no mirrors.

I also think constructive criticism is one thing, coming on just to find fault is another, maybe that is not your game, but for some here it is. I do know how hard it is to put yourself out there. And as Rick once said, you cannot please everyone, and what may not be your cup of tea may be mine. To each its own.

Technical new equipment aside, I like her album. She has a Grace Slick type of sound.

Fine.

Here's me in the Studio, singing close Trio Harmonies.

 Oh, and by the way, this was all sung LIVE - BY ME -track by layered track.

No Vocoders / Harmonizers / Rockin' Barbie here...this is ALL LIVE, done the OLD FASHIONED WAY:

Nora, I was at a summer in service class this summer. A girl I used to have classes with confessed something to me I never knew. See.. I had a class with a professor that rode me hard every critique day. The students would chime in picking every little flaw apart, I would get so flustered I sometimes would go home and cry. It was that bad of a critique. It drove me crazy seeing that some would hardly put any time in their work and yet find all kind of fault with mine. I mean it was brutal!

The girl I had in service told me they would attack my work so I would get discouraged and not put so much time in my work. You see they thought I was making them have to work harder. The professor was just an A$$hole. Later the picture he tore apart visually won my senior show. Grand prize. I was making them have to work harder you see. They did not like having to put out any effort in their work. She apologized to me for being part of the group.

Honestly you know you have nothing to prove. Put your work on here so your friends enjoy it and if anyone else thinks they can do a better job then they can just get on here and prove it. It is easy to be an armchair quarterback, it is another to actually play for the team.

Your work is great, I am proud you take the time to share your work with us despite the ones who feel it is their duty to nit pick. Please keep sharing.

It was constructive criticism, something I've never seen offered to her, even once with all the posts she has put up over the years. I've stayed away from commenting all this time but I finally felt the need to say something.
After seeing her response to my post, I can see why no one offers anything but shiny accolades.

And this will be my last post on the topic.

That little recorder won't catch much in the way of musical dynamics so nobody can get a fair example of what the session sounded like. If you try to hear beyond the recorder, you can tell the song probably sounded pretty damn good. If it were possible, I would love to hear that song live.

Don't let the naysayers discourage you, Nora.

That's what I was trying to say.

OK...no harm; no foul. :(

Nothing to feel sorry for. I don't think Don was trying to be ugly. He didn't like that recording and said as much. But I know how good you sing I have your CD. I can hear through a recorder because I own one and I know it has some qualities of muffling out some of the sounds. Your doing great on your music Nora. :D

Keep doing what you love to do. You couldn't stop making music if you tried. It is an intricate part of who you are. I appreciate your talents and wish I could get the guts to walk up on a stage and sing without all the butterflies and elephants that invade my stomach when I do. I am going to have to go do that this year sometime. I asked you for advice because I have respect for your opinion on the subject.
:D

Geez ...pounce on G~boy, you guys!!
He didn't say this was an untalented group
who should give up and quit performing
forever ...he was constructive and forthright!!

I listened and I normally like Nora's voice, but
this particular recording is not a good example
of what she is capable of. It's a very poor
example if you are trying to promote the band and
it's a rotten example if you are trying to sell that Sony
Digital Candy Bar ...

Nora, unfortunately I was unable to make out a word you
were singing and the drums were overpowering your voice.
Perhaps it's where the device was placed while
recording ...perhaps the music does not transfer well
from that device and we are unable to hear it as clearly
as you do ...either way, your band is much better than this
recording reflects. A lot of people are clicking
on the thread who may have never heard your band/cd's!!

Excuses, excuses. You are posting on the Internet. Take a few months' worth of cable/Internet fees and put it towards one of these.

You can at least get some credible sounds, even if you can only mic the drums with 1 mic.

Don's criticism was 100% constructive. I didn't hear this clip, so I have nothing to add. But I've heard your stuff in the past and couldn't even give the music itself a chance because I couldn't hear anything.

LOVE Presonus products - especially their DAW - Studio One. They are headquartered here in Baton Rouge, and most of the guys are phenomenal musicians. The owner is the lead guitar player for Louisiana's LeRoux. Definitely cannot go wrong with their product line.

Matt, I don't think a person who has just lost their job will have any expendable money. Cable is probably the least cut back someone might have to make if they have went from a two income household to a one income household. Jobs are hard to come by and it may be a long stretch between jobs. As for it being clear or not, well, at least she tried to share it, maybe let her know that it was hard to hear instead? Look I know for a fact I recorded my voice on something and it sounded fine on my end but the person I sent it to could not hear it. I was trying to explain to Don that I have her CD and the song is great.

Nora, please allow me to chime in. You have sent me a couple releases of your cd's and they are actually quite good. Why? Because they are of a finished product. I think the point many here are making is, don't release something that you wouldn't release publicly or commercially. You think the BIG artists do that? Well Journey aside(Generations), they would not and do not. My advice, erase this fuckin' link, re-record the thing and release a finished product you'd go to war with. I think you have the goods, and you're band, while maybe not the E Street Band or the Heartbreakers, is decent.

Take me advice, tell me to go fuck a volcano, but that's my take.

Oh good God...I saw YOU chime in and was afraid to open this! LOL

Look -

My whole point of doing this is to show that yes, we DO PLAY LIVE and don't rely on bullshit smoke and mirrors.
Perhaps that got lost in translation....OK; point taken...these things happen.

Live and learn.

I have no job prospects right now; I am just trying to get my Music and voice out there.
My SoundCloud Account has 2 Songs from our CD - as examples of me proving that I can do background / harmonizing Vocals.

Again, I apologize for lashing out....it's just....GOD I want to do Studio Work SO BAD.

very solid advice. whenever you have to say " well you should hear how it sounds on the cd"
then thats really the only way it should be heard, you are very passionate about your music,
remember some maybe hearing it for the first time by a recording that does not do justice
to the actual sound. best of luck to you Nora!
