The band’s North American tour runs through the end of June.
VH have offered up the second in a series of “interviews,” as David Lee Roth sits down with Alex and Eddie to discuss the band’s early years.
(Watch part 1 of the session here.)
The guys discuss the details of their first recording contract – very interesting stuff for musicians to take note of, even if VH experienced these things more than 30 years ago.
“They called it a Motown deal,” explains Eddie, “which was an 11-point deal; a point is 1% – not of a 100%, but 1% of 90%. And the basis for that came from the old days when 78s were delivered; upon delivery, approximately 10% of the product broke. So they paid you on 90% of the delivery. We had an 11 point deal and 3 points went to [producer] Ted [Templeman].”
“Ted still makes more money than I do on those first two records,” adds Roth.
“Oh ya,” says Eddie, “he makes more than all of us.”
