Buying a Juicer - Advice Anyone?

PostPosted: Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:37 am

Every year at this time, I find myself wishing I had bought a juicer to take advantage of the hundreds of oranges and lemons my trees produce. But, every year I also find myself caught up in the rat race of doing waaaaay too much comparison/research as to which juicer is the best, easiest, yada, yada, yada.... Eventually, I get frustrated, and I've spent so much time overthinking it that the oranges and lemons are past their optimum juicing point.
The other thing that makes it somewhat of a pain in the ass is how freakin' seriously these "juice people" take these things! OMFG.... They review these things like their one of the most important decisions you'll ever make in your life!

So, here's the deal. I'm looking for a decent, powerful citrus juicer that will handle around 200-300 oranges/lemons without burning out - and hopefully doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Believe it or don't, the one I've been most impressed with so far is the Hamilton Beach 932 Commercial Citrus Juicer.
http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/products/c ... r-932.html
It's actually a manual press but it's bad-to-the-bone, very well-made and it extracts ALL of the juice with hardly any mess!

Anyone have any suggestions based on your own experience? I'd sure appreciate it!

Thanks!

Steve

One simple opinion for you from someone who did the same obsessive research quest on juicing several months back. Go for it if you're growing your own produce. If not, I think a lot of people don't realize how much stuff you have to buy to get a good glass of juice.

Brands... I forget now. I know the Jack LaLane is not very highly rated, even though it was the one that launched the craze. I think it's the name brand equivalent of the George Foreman grill. I've not heard the best things about Cuisinart either - they've gone the way of KRUPS and sold their reputation out for profit.

I forget which one I almost bought, but I remember it wasnt cheap. I wish you the best in your quest.

Thanks for the reply Ripster!

Yeah, it does indeed seem the most recognizable named units have some of the lowest ratings. This one looks kinda intriguing if for no other reason than the fact that NASA had to have had a hand in the design/building of it!  There's one on Craig's List locally for $40.00 but do I really need a juicer that spins at 30,000 rpm+....??   I swear to God, this thing never finishes spinning down before the video is over!! It's got to easily be spinning at mach 1 or better! Don't take my word for it, check out the video!  This thing is freaking awesome! There's actually a review of it on YT by some guy who put his on eBay. This thing is vintage but G'damn!!! How cool is this thing?! It spins so fact that the lid actually has lockdowns like a pressure cooker! Definitely worth the click just to glimpse what quality technology used to be like back in the day.

The Braun is definitely one of the better ones. We've got a Braun handheld mixer (can't remember exactly what it's called...) and it freakin' ROCKS!
Nuts, ice cream, bread crumbs, coffee, gravel, screws..... this thing'll kick its ass and live to fight another day!

I've had the Jack LaLane one for a few years now. Works great still and I use it each morning.

No, but there are a lot of people who participate on this board who's opinions and info have been useful to me as well as others. I thought this was the appropriate forum to discuss well.... anything, really. Wasn't really asking the question as if this place was my support group. Just wondered if anyone had been down that road.

Sorry.

So ignoring my post (which somehow irritated you) wasn't possible? You seriously felt compelled to take the time to rudely reply. In some ways this board has stayed exactly the same.

So you're saying some of the juicers on the market have the capability of chilling the juice as it's extracted?? :P That's gonna run the price way way up isn't it?! 8)

Sorry for taking your comments seriously. Guess I was a bit thin-skinned there for a moment.

During Valentine's Day you mentioned that your husband hated you. So if you had one that cared, you wouldn't need a vibrator/massager.

After much research last year I got the Breville juice fountain. It was about $130 I think. It was rated far superior to most of the others though is pricier and a little harder to find than most. This is not the kind of juicer that you need just to make orange juice though. It's one of those heavy duty things we use to make disgusting drinks out of apples, carrots, beets and kale. Blech, LOL.

I've seen that brand advertised heavily throughout my quest and it fairs very well with the customer reviews. However, $130 is a lot more than I want to spend for what I'm going to be using it for. Hell, I can buy a shitload of already squoze.... squeezed.... juice for that price!

Breville... that was the brand I almost bought. Whatever I was looking at was in the $400-$500 range. Luckily I came to my senses, lol.

Steve, worst case, you can't go wrong with one of these, and they cost a whole heck of a lot less.

DONE AND DONE!! Hey Drew, you can go ahead and shut this thread down. Rip saved the day for me as well as a shit load of money!!

Funny thing is we've actually got a couple of those exact ones. They're Tupperware I believe and came in a multi-pack set of some sort years ago and believe it or not, they've actually gotten used once or twice but God Damn what a mess!

Something else I've learned during this trek through the juicer abyss is those thick glass one-piece juicers that look like something directly out of the 30's are a very popular item and fetch as much as $30.00 on eBay. Laurie's got a couple of those in the cupboard.... Hmm.....

Just saw a photo of one of those online as well -- both that and the one I posted were referred to as "vintage", so they must be older.

Is that what they're calling it now? We're all friends here, you can admit that you need a little extra help. :D

Bought a juicer a couple of days ago and thought I'd share what I got - if for no other reason than to follow up (in case anyone actually did find any value to this thread, and to see the thread through to completion ( a trait I've learned many women find very desirable! :D )

So after reading about many juicers and their respective features & benefits as well as their pros & cons, perhaps the most relevant thing of all is that there are 2 types of juicers out there:
1. There are those which are designed and built to process pretty much every vegetable out there by extracting as much liquid as possible while removing nearly all the fibrous pulp. They allow the consumer to create their own custom-created juices which are very high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. The prices and the customer satisfaction ratings of these juicers are far and wide - and from what I learned in a very short time, purchasing one of these types of juicers and becoming a "juicer" (that's what this band of celery-munching, hoity-toity goofballs refer to themselves as...) will alter your state of consciousness turning you into a weird, overly critical, slightly orange-tinted cynic about every kind of non-juice-based food on the planet.   Then there are those in group 2.

2. Citrus juicers. Specifically designed to ream out everything but the rind of the citrus and separating as much or as little of the pulp and fibrous materials from the juice. Most of these process half of a piece of fruit at a time and are fairly quick to process the product. And while a few of the juicers in group 1 are setup to extract the juice from citrus fruit (although none of them scored very high at this endeavor), none of the citrus-specific juicers have the ability to extract the juice from any other type of fruit or vegetable - which makes these juicers far less.

Once I learned the difference between the categories, I focused only on the citrus juicers and was quickly able to choose one which met my needs.

Black & Decker Handy Juicer
http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng ... ndy+Juicer

Holds 32 oz. of juice and allows you to adjust the pulp content from all of it to none of it. It's not the most powerful thing I've ever used in the kitchen but for what it's designed for, it's ample. Very few parts and all of it - including the motorized base - goes right in the dishwasher. For $18.86 it's adequate.

One side note - I don't recommend squeezing pre-chilled oranges. The juicer struggled to tear through the oranges which I had chilled in the fridge overnight so that the juice would already be cold. Room temp. fruit was quick and didn't strain the motor at all.
