Elton John's song is about the guy, the lyrics actually written by Bernie Taupin, but when you've got that, you know you're doing alright.

Sad to see he couldn't beat that awful disease.

Really?!? I always thought they used the name because they
both loved/had great respect for The Band/Levon, but isn't Levon
a drug dealer/not a good father in that song?!?

Bernie used Levon's name in the song because he liked it but the song isn't about him.

A true legend and inspiration to so many, loved his soulful vox.
He was perfect in CMD, just brilliant. RIP, Levon Helm.

I guess I should have said that Elton's song referenced the guy's name. I'll be more careful next time.
