(click on the link to listen to Mel's rant)..

Mel Gibson is seriously considering suing Joe Eszterhas for secretly recording him at his home in Costa Rica last December, and then releasing the audio rant.

Sources connected with Mel tell TMZ ... the actor believes he has a "basic human right" NOT to be secretly recorded in his own home.

We're told Mel's people are looking at the laws of Costa Rica to determine if recording laws were violated and, even if they weren't, if Mel's right of privacy was violated by the release of the audio.

Mel explodes in the recording about Eszterhas' lack of progress with "The Maccabees" script -- "What the f**k have you been doing!!" He also unloads on Oksana Grigorieva, calling her a ""F**king c**t, c**ksucking whore."

We're told Mel believes anyone recorded "at their worst moment" would sound awful, and it's unfair to trap people in their refuge.

One Mel source notes with skepticism that Eszterhas has made other allegations against Mel ... that the actor also ranted against the Jews and expressed pleasure that John Lennon was shot and killed .... but none of that is on the tape.

Could this dude's career possibly be in worse shape? I agree that he shouldn't have been recorded in his home (and has every right to sue for damages). But (to channel Dan) "HOLY CHRIST ON A UNICYCLE!!!".  just when things settle down from his last rants... He might want to look into some anger management. :D

It is a shame that Mel can't seem to control himself. I have always felt that he is one of the finer actors of this generation. Just as with musicians, I guess we have to try to seperate the art from the person. :(

I've always loved Mel's work. It's too bad that his mental/emotional health issues are tarnishing all the wonderful work he's done over the years. :( Get some help Mel! :(

Uhm, I don't know. I'm sure there are some writers/producers/directors, etc, might want him for a certain role simply because he's so passionate & able to display rage. I mean, look at Braveheart or Lethal Weapon. His ability to be a slightly psycho tough guy makes him perfect for those roles. If I were him and/or his agent, I'd be looking for some uber-bad guy role very quickly. I think that if he can come across on the big screen just as he appears to in these recordings, then in the long run, his personal life may be rationalized a bit.

I dunno...but it's a career tactic I'd certainly explore.

Mel is mentally ill, plus rage issues. It's very sad to see how far he has fallen. This is a man who could kill somebody one day. He is obviously off his meds or not on the right ones. Did anyone see that movie with Jodi Foster where he talked through a puppet? If so, how did you like it? The reviews were good. I keep meaning to rent it.

Mel's inner tumoil is what makes him such a great arteest ...same w/great
painters, musicians, etc. They're all crazy, alcoholic, drug crazed, intense people
at some point ...if they're good!! I'm sure Gin~gin is probably a closet dominatrix.

I wish someone would release an official CD of all Mel's phone calls and this rant. They are entertaining comedy gold!!!!
