Queen to resurrect Freddie via Tupac-like Hologram

Postby Jeremey » Sun May 13, 2012 1:56 am

I read last night (don't have a link) that Brian May said this week Freddie would be making an appearance onstage during their current tour via a projection like image similar to the Tupac projection at Coachella earlier this year.

Is that a WTF idea to anyone else out there besides myself?

Okay found the link and I guess it's the Queen musical "We Will Rock You" that they are resurrecting Freddie for, not their tour. Still think it's ghoulish.

Hey Steve, this is actually brand new technology that was first used at Coachella Festival last month, using giant mirrors, projectors and invisible screens to make it look like a floating 3D image interacting with people onstage. It's a $10 million dollar effect that has just been developed for that use. Definitely not just projecting a film on a screen, but a fully dimensional and interacting "hologram." if you haven't seen the effect search "Tupac Coachella" to see how it looks. It's an unbelievable effect.

Interesting thought, luckily for Neal Schon it appears Brian May would approve. Although seriously, I don't for a minute think that Perry is the kind of icon that would bring that jaw dropping holy shit phenomenon if a holographic Perry reproduced an Escape era concert on stage. The wow factor would be limited IMO to a select group of legends.

Elvis
Michael Jackson
Freddie Mercury
The Beatles (get Paul and Ringo onstage with John and George)
Jim Morrison
Kurt Cobain
Jimi Hendrix

I would love to see this utilized some day for a jaw dropping installed (Vegas style non touring) show of Rock and Roll Heaven type show. Bring back Buddy Holly, Elvis, Michael Jackson and get Marilyn and James Dean onstage, and have the whole show hosted by Dick Clark. That's a show I'd pay money to see LOL.

Hey....this could be the one and only way Perry would take the stage with Arnel......and probably still get paid like a mother fucker. :D
It would work out great for Steve. He could be on tour and not even have to work!

Pretty much it, with one big exception, this being the "resurrection" of a living person to create a new, "live" performance, versus using a computer generated character from scratch. I'm interested to know if the Tupac (and Freddie) is an animated likeness or actual footage manupulated to create a new performance.

Apparently Snoop Dogg must be present in order for it to work, so I'm not sure how Queen will be able to pull that off without some help from him.

I think the "creepy" thing about this to me is, people making money off them
in this way when they are gone, in the case of Elvis & Celine, from her perspective I believe it was in tribute, for the network , they used him for money. With this new technology, there will be whole shows like this.

ditto!!!

Even worse, I have this recurring nightmare that some shameful, creepy, and lame idiot will figure out how to manipulate this technology so that poor-excuses-for-talent such as Justin Bieber can "appear" in multiple venues at the same time - making more money and saturating the industry with even miore crap than there is now.

OK off of soapbox.

I think if it's done tastefully, it could be awesome! Just think about an actual Queen show with Freddie and the band on stage. It would give fans who never had the chance to see him while he was alive, a second chance. They could do some serious charity fund raisers for the Aids foundation, etc...

If it were done in that manner, I think it would be awesome for all involved. But to use it with a make-shift tribute band and the band keep the proceeds? That's just more than a little disturbing.

if they do that we might as well bring George Washington and John Adams back and have them run for President again...

Sorry, this hologram shit sounds like something you'd see during the beginning montage of a campy mid-80s or 90s cyberpunk action/sci fi/thriller movie. I could easily see Judge Dredd or John Spartan/Sly Stallone taking a flying car home from a hologram concert just before having some virtual reality sex with Sandra Bullock.

It's weird as fuck and can't possibly be taken seriously.

Actually I think what you’re looking at in regards to this new technology could very well be the next generation in concerts and shows. Call it virtual concerts. Imagine a band doing one show at a single location and that show being projected to multiple locations across the country and perhaps internationally in real time. Sure there are pros and cons as is true with everything. The cons could include but are not limited to, the artists are physically absent, the shows are all exactly the same at all locations, no back stage party with the band, etc. On the other hand, the pros could include but are not limited to the band not getting worn out moving from one place to the other on a set schedule with serous time constraints, the singer not stressing vocal cords because of repetitious shows, less risk to the band members, equipment or support getting into some type of accident while in transit.

Sure, some have stressed that much, if not most of the revenue a band brings in is from physically touring. However, consider the resources and overhead that a band would save by not having to physically move their shows around from one location to the next. The question remains, would virtual concerts generate ticket sales and if not, how could such concerts attract ticket buyers? Since the cost associated with the support of a virtual concert be considerably less, the cost of tickets to such a function could be considerably less as well. This would be favorable to the concert goers. The promoter could possibly combine such a virtual concert with other functions as well in helping attract ticket sales.

Virtual concerts may not work across the board for all genres of music. However, who would have thought the ZIP car concept would work? For sure it would be a slow transition from live concerts to virtual. What I think is, we will see virtual concerts being attempted by promoters on a very small limited scale, such as starting out with no-load acts such as the mentioned Justin Bieber as a pilot. Doing so, the promotion community will gather lessons learned, analyze the data, and then make tweaks here and there in the attempt to meet or exceed expectations. Tweaks could include but would not be limited to items such as type of genre that works best on such a platform, other activities that could be integrated into a virtual concert, and the enhancement of the technology itself. If such a concept does take off in popularity, expect more mainstream entertainment to migrate onto this platform.

Currently it is arguable that this technology is currently being used somewhat in a reckless fashion due to it only being utilized in projecting dead entertainers. However, at the end of the day, it will simply depend on how the 13 through 28 year old age group embraces the virtual concert concept. Because after all, they are the primary consumer group targeted by marketing and let’s face it, the 28 years old and greater age groups are no longer the majority. Best part about this whole thing is, sitting back and watching what happens.

Journey could have used this during the infamous "Bottle to Schons head" incident....
