Unless Scholz actually says he fired up those hibachis himself, the Boston Herald article holds no merit.

It is odd that Delp apparently never had the "stones" to confront/stand up to Sholz, but had the balls to take his own life. By all signs, Delp was a seriously troubled individual and the incident with his fiancee's sister seems to be the trigger that sent him over the edge. Not, Sholz who he had been dealing with for the better part of 4 decades.

Also wierd is the way all the band members seem to feel Sholz has control or power over them. I mean what is Sholz, a mafia Don? Is he going to whack you or your first born if you argue over a tune or decide to quit the band? I agree financially Sholz, could do some harm to them by firing them, but that comes with the territory when band members are not equals, which apparently was the deal from the start.
Goodreau quit the band a long, long time ago. Had a bit of success on his own and with other bands. What is the deal with this great "fear" of Tom Sholz? Obviously he is a controlling ass, but come on, he is not "connected". Or is he?

There are some people in this world that are pretty good with controlling and putting fear in people - especially those who are tied by fiances. Couple that with a man who obviously experienced very elevated levels of anxiety, and I can definitely see why one could assume Tom was the indirect cause of Brad taking his own life. However, I don't ever want to assume that to be the gospel truth, because that is a very serious charge. Some people just don't mix well. If Tom Scholz had worked with Steve Perry, imagine those fireworks!

"Third Stage" was the last great Boston album from start to finish. However "Walk On" had some pretty good songs even though it wasn't as good overall. The title track from that album is as good as anything that band has ever done.

As for "Corporate America", it has two or three good songs and that's it. The rest sounds nothing like the classic Boston that I love and the country song is worth of giving Scholz the death penalty.

Did you hear this one? Delp and Goudreau(sp?) did this song to bring to Scholz to excite him into doing a new album. Not sure how old it is, but not more than a couple of years before Delp did his barbecue exit.

With the exception of "More Than A Feeling" and the "Foreplay" prelude of "Foreplay/Piece Of Mind," all Boston songs sound pretty much the same to me.

You're right but, then again, the Boston sound is fairly unique and recognizable.

Rockin' Away was written in 2006:
"Rockin’ Away was written in the summer of 2006 for the 30th Anniversary of the release of the first “Boston” record. It was the last song that Brad and I wrote together. In it, Brad reflects on how he became involved in music, and thanks his many fans for their years of loyalty. It was my hope that the song might lead to a rekindling of my relationship with the band. Unfortunately it did not. Brad’s family and I felt that his many fans would appreciate hearing his spectacular voice one more time on a new song. I hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it." - Barry Goudreau

I went to the Brad Delp tribute concert in Boston (August 2007). RTZ played a few songs, including this one. Brian Maes (keyboardist from RTZ) covered the vocals with Barry on guitar. They also did "Until Your Love Comes Back Around" (written by Maes for Brad to sing in RTZ) and "Dreams" from Barry's solo album, which originally featured Brad on vocals. Fran Cosmo played a few songs with them on guitar but was on full vocal rest due to some issue with his vocal cords. Sib played about half the set on drums with RTZ, but I can't remember which songs he played- definitely on "Dreams." They also played a new song they wrote in tribute to Brad, "Set the Songbird Free."

Set the Songbird Free:

Brian Maes said he had always been the lead vocalist in the bands he was in, but once he heard Brad sing "Until Your Love Comes Back Around," he knew where his place was in the band. An interesting note is that Fergie Frederiksen was originally slated to be the vocalist in RTZ.

That is a really cool song. Sounds like something off of the first album. To me, the songs that I've heard from Delp/Goudreau sound more like Boston than Boston does now.

Third stage is a Awesome album, and Walk On has some VERY strong tracks on it.
I have always felt Brad was not treated fairly money wise. however he did have a couple
divorces that sapped a lot of his earnings from the early days. I had some correspondence
with Mickie, his ex . she was still very fond of him and said Tom took advantage of Brad
horribly. he was a pacifist, not one for confrontation, and wanted to please everyone he could.

With every article about a rock band member's suicide the consensus seems to come down to how depressed they were and it wasn't their fault; why can't we just say that the last generation bred a bunch of pussies?

Thanks very much for the link. This article really was mind blowing. It's interesting Brad Delp actually sings on Walk On's Surrender To Me uncredited. ( these are the responses "girl u drive me outta my mind") . There were some posts on this on gonna hitch a ride and some said no it ain't him. Well that's just insane. There's no way in hell that's not Brad!!!!! Fran Cosmo didn't sound like that. And guess who sang those parts live and sounded just like he did on the record?????

Do you have a source to cite other than those message board posts?

I went back and listened to the studio version of Surrender to Me, and I don't think it sounds anything like Brad. I also listened to live versions of Surrender to Me, and Brad's vocal parts don't sound anything like the studio recording.

Walk On did not sell very well, and a big part of that was that it wasn't Brad on vocals. TS kept it very tight-lipped that it was Fran Cosmo who was singing on Walk On rather than Brad Delp. If Brad really sang on Walk On, why would TS not advertise that? He would have been able to say that Surrender to Me "featured" the vocals of Brad Delp.

Those parts you attribute to Brad in Surrender to Me don't sound liek Brad to me, either.

In other news, this litigation is deplorable. Delp took the easy way out, and for that, he has no one to blame but himself and his own problems.

Brad did not sing at all on Walk On. he is credited with helping write the title track.
The album was certified platinum in september of 1994.

Delp accepted responsibility for what he did in his notes to his family, he never blamed anyone for his troubles(At least not from the info provided) and suicide is not an easy way out. If it was an easy thing to do we would have 10x more people ending there lives in the U.S alone. I do agree that the litigation is ridiculous but most litigation is ,its not whether things are right or wrong more than whether or not an attorney can win the case.

Fair point about Delp never blaming anyone for his troubles, but I can't agree with you about suicide. But I digress and don't feel like debating this, already done so on here a million times.

That would be Tracy Ferrie on bass. He replaced Tim Gaines in Stryper, who in turn replaced him.

I just saw this on thirdstage.ca:
http://www.thirdstage.ca/boston/news/la ... rley-dahme

I wonder when the real reasons will come out. I'm pretty sure Brad was close with Kim and Jeff. Gary Pihl is undoubtedly close with Tom Scholz and won't be going anywhere.

I had plans to see them a number of times this summer. I'm not so sure how excited I am about this anymore.

I still have that album actually. Amazing how fast 25 years goes by. I did like the melodies on that album when it first came out and I still keep it on my ipod for times when I want to listen to them again. However, I was under the impression that the band caught a little heat back in the day for that album because most of the drums were done on an electronic drum machine and only three albums were released in a specific amount of time, which wasn't pleasing to the record company. I'm not sure since I never researched this information, just stuff I picked up on here and there when discussing the Third Stage album.
