Thanks for the link. I'm a BIG believer in defending yourself as much as possible (by educating yourself) when it comes to dealing with areas in which the average joe is at a tremendous commercial disadvantage when transacting with industry insiders (e.g., buying jewelry/diamonds, car service, air conditioner service etc.). Always enjoy reading articles like this to be as educated as possible when it comes to dealing with these kinds of things.

I thought Lauer's comment at the end was classic - "Enjoy your time in the witness relocation program"...

We've got insurance so all we pay is the service fee, but I know a lot of people don't.

This shouldn't be any surprise at all. This happens with EVERYTHING from people coming out to fix your washer and dryer and auto mechanics, to when you go to the dentist. When the cost of living rises, so does the frequency of this type of thing. Because when stuff gets more expensive like fuel for the boat, a round of golf, car insurance, etc. etc, and soon health care, people don't cut back on those type of luxuries, they just jack up the amount of revenue that they are bringing in by either upping their prices or most popularily, making you purchase shit that you don't really need. And in this situation, they even will replace the factory parts with shitty Chinese and Hecho En Mexico trash. Just wait until the "professionals" get hit with the higher taxes and Obamacare kicks in. You will see "professionals" scrambling at all corners of the career spectrum to make up for thoughs losses.

No political rant here, just plain and simple what to expect when you raise fees and cost of living, people tend to make up the difference in other ways besides cutting back on their lifestyle or working harder.

Dial One Hour tried to rip us off a few years ago. Our AC unit kept leaking all the coolant. They came out to refill it a few times and finally they said they couldn't refill it any longer due to regulations. The repairman supposedly did a leak test and said there were several leaks both inside the home and outside on the unit itself. He told us we'd have to replace the unit at a cost of approximately $3000. Fortunately, we knew someone from our church who owns their own heating/cooling company and they sent out their head maintenance person. He checked out the unit and did a leak test and found ONE tiny leak on one of the pipes coming from the house to the unit. He was able to diagnose and fix the problem for under $100.

Meanwhile, Dial One Hour sent us a bill for diagnostics and to refill the coolant for probably around $500. We refused to pay the bill and wrote a nice long letter to the area manager. They wrote back saying that they'd write off the invoice. Several months later, they tried to collect on it again, which we promptly responded to and reminded them of their previous ineptitude and dishonesty. We didn't hear from them again, fortunately.
