Pretty deceptive. Almost fooled me. I'm thinking of going to this, but only for NR and Winger.

I would rather see Russell's version (as long as it is not in a small club) . The gumba from XYZ fronting the other one was horrible at the M3 Festival.

New Great White:

Russell's

To each their own, but I'll take Russell's The XYZ guy probably hits more notes, but it doesn't look right. Looks like some dude from Jersey Shore singing karaoke.

Not amped up to see either though.

I would rather see the lead singer's band in any form than a band with replacement singer. Journey?

Nothing "Great" about either of them.

There's maybe three songs I like from Great White, and the rest of it I can take or leave it. But, if I HAD to see a version, I'd probably do the Terrier's version!

I mean if he was the lead singer it's not that bad. It's not like this is Gary Cherone going around calling himself "Van Halen." I don't know anything about this shit band though, lol, so if i'm wrong, correct me.

The real deceptive ones are where the drummer or bassist has the legal rights to the old band name, but the core of the group (i.e., songwriters, singers, lead guitarists etc) are no longer with the group. The band that calls itself The Guess Who is a prime example of that. No Randy Bachman, no Burton Cummings. It's the fuckin drunk of an ex-bass player (Jim Kale), their old drummer, and some other buffoons. What a travesty.

Wow, just saw that clip, I didn't even know there was a band out there touring under Guess Who. No BC or RB = lame. Definitely wouldn't go see that.

Burton's always bitching about it on his Facebook. I think it really pisses him off to know that people are getting deceived into going to see "The Guess Who." Kale did pull an ingenious move though when he incorporated the band after they split in 75... that had never really been done before. And now to this day, he has the rights to the name. The band is truly terrible... horrible vocals.

IMO, Burton is like Perry in that regard, very unique voice/tone.....there is some vocalists ya just can't replace.

I agree, there are some vocalists you can't replace. But Perry's not 1 of them. And many of the '80s singers who were known primarily for their range have proven to be quite replaceable (e.g., Kelly Hanssen for Foreigner). There are very few vocalists who are not replaceable in the average fan's ears.

Indeed, he's very replaceable to the average fan. Many people loved Augeri and many love Pineda and don't pine for Perry. Further, there are plenty of tribute singers who do a nice Perry (e.g., Jeremey, Kelty). That's not to say any of those guys are as good at doing Steve Perry as Steve Perry is, but he's proven to be quite imitable. But I've never heard ANYBODY come close to approximating Burton's voice/style. That is one of the very few truly inimitable voices.

All that said, I'd be the first in line to see Perry if he came back. But I just don't think he's all that unique.

As far as Perry goes, sure anybody can replace any singer, does it work as well, obviously not. IMO it wasn't Perry's range that made him unique, as you said there is lots of 80s singers that had lots of range and sang quite high......I think what made his voice/style unique was the tone/timbre of his voice and definitely his delivery. Some singers will have one quality but not the other, have yet to see a singer pull it off. I've never been one to rank a singer's range near the top of favorite vocal qualities list........personally couldn't give a shit if they can can sing like a chick or not, lots can. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. ;-)

Little River Band fooled me once,
no original members, only Wayne Nelson, who comes and goes since the 80s.

HEard later three original members still tour but since Stephen Housden 1981–2006
guitarists owns the name he wont let them use it.

The real LRB was my first concert ever.

But I actually like the current group known as LRB. They've put out some good albums. And Wayne Nelson has sung some of their hits, including The Night Owls, so it's definitely a legitimate group. Greg Hind is a great talent too.

In some sense, LRB is a lot like Toto. Relatively faceless, multiple lead singers, awesome musicians, and a revolving door of players over the years. I don't really fault or mind those guys continuing on in the Little River Band name.

Birtles, Shorrock, & Goble (the original 3) are GREAT too. Their Full Circle DVD is fantastic. See, e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzVHb7W97JY . I won't fault the current LRB since BSG play stuff like The Night Owls (which none of them sung) on this DVD.

Graham and Goble wrote Night Owls (Nelson has no credit on it) so I can see why they would perform it. Hell, Goble pretty much wrote every single hit LRB ever had.

Fair point. But like I said, I enjoy both bands. And if memory serves me correctly, I think Shorrock was offered the opportunity to buy the name in the 90s and he declined. And the current LRB guys have written some really nice songs the last few years, too. Some of these joke bands like the current Guess Who are mere impostors, nothing more.

I prefer Chalfant to Perry, myself. Not drafting him was the absolute biggest mistake they ever made.
