euters) - A masked gunman shot dead 10 people and wounded 30 to 40 others at a showing of new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" at a movie theater in the U.S. city of Denver, local radio station KOA reported on Friday, citing witnesses.

The radio station said a figure in a gas mask had opened fire at the showing in a mall in the suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas bomb. It said initial police estimates were of 30-40 injured.

Just read of this on the MSN homepage. Why does a fucking nut have to ruin everyone else's good time? Mom didn't let him suck her floppy tits enough when he was a kid? People are dead. Unfuckingbelievable.

This just sickens me. It really is starting to feel like nothing and nowhere is safe anymore. People will say "Oh this kind of stuff always happened, it just wasn't' as documented as much as it is today" and stuff like that. But I don't buy it.

This sick fuck better not get 1 iota of leniency or doubt from the judge or jury about his level of sanity. This was calculated and was the subject of plenty of prior design. A mask, a bulletproof vest, gas/smoke bombs, rifle/handgun/shotgun, and kicking in the emergency door? Fuck this guy.

I heard the baby was 3 months old and there was also a witness who said they saw an officer carrying an eight-year old out of the theater with gunshot wounds to her back and the child was not moving.

agreed... his Mom lives in San Diego in a nice house, she was quoted as saying "You have the right person"....and the gunmen lived in a low grade apartment in CO, by all accounts...I'm pretty sure she had to boot this loser out of her home...What can you do against crazy?

Anyone want to talk gun control?

On a related note, I am planning to see the movie on Sunday...I was planning to go shooting at a range afterwards, but now thinking that may be in poor taste (on two accounts at least)

Gun control. When a legally carrying citizen puts a round in this nutbags head before he can shoot 10 more people. That's good gun control.

you seriously think, in a dark movie theater, with tear gas, smoke etc , someone would nail him down right away ? And who's to say there would be ONE citizen carrying a gun, what if there is 10 of them in the same room and they all start shooting eachother and others !? ;)

In a perfect world, ONE guy would take the guy out and the tragedy's casualties with be minimal. But remember this is real world, not a Hollywood Hero Movie.

With that said, I am not against citizens carrying guns, but more against how easy one can obtain a gun. I still think there should be some restrict laws before you can obtain a gun .

Let's at least let them finish cleaning the bloodstains from women, children, and innocent adults off the movie theater floor and seats before we start getting political about this.

High school kids, college kids, people that work irregular hours/days (e.g., professionals like nurses), people that are taking a vacation day because they are diehard Batman fans, and people that aren't too weak to tough out a tired Friday at work, just for starters...

Obviously true about the gun carrying citizens stepping in, since Colorado doesn't have very strict gun laws. There may have been people carrying guns. A citizen carrying a gun isn't going to save the day here. People's reactions are to get out, not be a hero. The guy had on a bullet proof vest, so in a dark theater with gas it would have been near impossible to stop him. I don't believe, no matter what the laws are, you can stop crazy. Which is why I feel we live in a pretty scary world. And metal detectors at doors wouldn't help either since the guy stormed the exit doors. Exit doors have to be there for fire. Nothing could change this. A crazy person who wants to kill people will. Terribly sad. I'm guessing the police wish he had resisted.

I guess we will see as this story progresses and they show more of who got shot and who the shooter was.

No offense Matt, but Stephanopolus on ABC brought up the Tea Party earlier this a.m. MSNBC brought up Watergate of all things, and Mayor Bloomburg has already called out Obama and Romney to ask what they are gonna do about guns. So with that...

When seconds count, the cops will be there in minutes.

It's summer time....lots of teens have off. Not everyone works mon-fri 9-5 either. Why is this even an issue for you? We are going to chastise victims for even being there that late? Really? This is not a new concept. Midnight movies have been going on for many years.

What Matt means is, at least leave this thread out of the political debates, not to completely stop discussing politics. Why dont you create a thread about it.

Yeap, that's pretty much our definition of gun control in the military as well. Gun Control: Hitting the intended target with minimal rounds.

Now even though there could have been citizens at the theater carying firearms, there is a big difference between carrying a weapon and knowing how to properly use one. Obviously no one on the receiving end really knew how to use one.

Thats most definitely true. You can learn to use a gun, but that doesn't prepare you for a situation like this, the way military or police are trained. My husband is a cop, and he will not sit ANYWHERE with his back to a door. I always think he's paranoid, but who knows. He wants to be ready to react to anything. But he's trained. Average joe citizen is not. And all this is pointless anyway when you realize it's a loud action movie, dark, took people time to realize there was shooting, gas, mass chaos and confusion. Don't think ANYONE could have stopped him.
