Any of you suffer from Sciatica?

Do you have any suggestions for Sciatica pain relief?

I get it about twice a year, whether I need to or not. My bouts last about 3 days. Feels like a knife. It normally goes away on it's own, once I have time to relax and get flat on my back for awhile. Sometimes I lay on my back, pull my knees up toward my chest and roll my legs from left to right a few times. Stretching also helps, as does taking some Motrin. Having sex normally makes it worse, as does excessive sitting.

Thanks!

I've had bouts with Sciatica many times in the past. But ever since this past Thursday night it's extra bad. The worst I've ever had it.

I have done the thing you mentioned about curling the knees up toward the chest. It helps relieve some of the pain in the moment, but it comes back as soon as I go back to a normal position.

A great chiropracter.... :D

Get someone to stand behind you & grab your arms...(elbows)
while your arms are crossed in front of you & have the guy in back
gently lift you up & slightly backwards..
(use in emerg only )...
Ice the area off & on too..
Not a doc lol but it works for me..

I had one bout with that. I was walking down the aisle of an airplane and bent over to pick up a piece of paper. It felt like someone stabbed above my right hip with an ice pick. I swear, I stood up and looked behind me to see who had done something to me. Of course, no one was there. It took about 3 days before it was almost all gone.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with back pain, easy to read and follow the simple exercises. Definitely worth tracking down a copy, got mine on ebay.

Treat your own back by Robin McKenzie.

Me...right now as a matter of fact...I have had this problem for over 20 years now. I cannot have most drugs to help with it due to my high blood pressure. Cold helps some. If it gets real bad the doctor prescribes a pain medicine for a while or gives a Cortisone shot. But I wait till it is extreme.

Sorry to hear this...I suffer too. Hang in there! We have some great nurses on MR that will be of better help. I have just learned to live with it.

Thank you!

I saw a doctor about it yesterday. He scheduled an appointment for me to get physical therapy for my back.

I read some reviews of the book that Majik recommended, and it got great reviews. So maybe that's something that you might want to look into as well?

Well, I don't know if this qualifies as "Sciatica", but I did have back / leg problems:

Approx. 20 years ago, I had a severe accident onstage during a Musical Dance number.

According to the XRays and Chiropractor, the only way to fully walk / dance is to have an operation because my L7 disc is crushed - there's literally nothing there.
I saw the Xray and was almost sick.

I ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to go "under the knife", and asked for an alternative....It was intensive Chiropractive adjustment therapy.
I had to do something, because I was bent forward at a 45-degree angle and had nerve damage in my left leg - I couldn't feel anything.

I worked the program 1000 percent....and now I am fine.
So fine that I dared to go back to what I love....Dance.

Ironically, Dance is the ONLY THING that keeps it "in check" - the core muscles keep my vertebrae "suspended" in that area.
