Last Mark and Brian show today

Postby Don » Sat Aug 18, 2012 2:04 am

For those in California, this is the end of an era. 25 years on KLOS.

"Mark Thompson announced that he was retiring from radio after 25 years and will move to Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife; he noted that his new home is equipped with a studio that allows him to do occasional media work. His last day at KLOS is to be August 17, 2012.
"It's just time," said Thompson, now 56. "Guys my age, they're dropping dead. There are other things I want to do. We fantasize about waking up on a Tuesday morning: 'Hey, let's go to New York and see a couple of plays,'" Thompson said. "Since I was 14, I've worked every day. I look forward to working when I choose to."

Brian Phelps announced that he too will be leaving KLOS. He plans to create a comedy podcast with Jill Whelan.
"Three years ago, when we signed this last contract, I almost had to be talked into signing it because I was so unbelievably tired of getting up at 3 o'clock in the morning. But I did, and I'm glad I did," Phelps said on the air.
He added that Thompson "is going to a wonderful life in North Carolina. We part as close as we've ever been."

I've only heard that Mark and Brian sucked and that was about 17 to 18 years ago. So it's probably no big deal. If it wasn't for me reading it here, I would have never heard about it at all. Thats a strong indication of how much of an impact these guys had on the community I live in.

They were syndicated on 30 stations across the country, have been in a few movies, had their own TV show at one time.
They've done quite well for themselves. Not exactly Rush Limbaugh famous but when it comes to Classic Rock Radio, they're pretty much known through out the country.

Not surprised that you haven't really heard of them. Reading through your post history , the world you seem familiar with appears to be incredibly small.

Not increadibly small, I just won't invest my time, attention, and efforts into something what doesn't give me the best returns. Listening to two fucktards yapping on the radio doesn't do it for me. At least when I listened to Stern 15 to 17 years ago, it was quite informative along with humorous. But in general talk radio is one of the distractors in my own life now and has been ever since I reached a specific maturity level. If I want to listen to music, I put on the ipod.

When I do listened to the radio, I do so for talk radio. Down in florida we have the Paul & Young Ron show or Elvis Duran, I prefer Paul & Young Ron to Elvis, but I laugh my ass off at some of their phone taps. Mid morning's you have The Herd or the Penthouse. I switch back & forth on these. When I listen to music in the ride, it's always my Ipod.

If I'm an 80 year old woman, that would make me one tough fucking old bitch with an excellent command of utilizing firearms.

LOL no geezer here. But yeah, when I was young and "stupid" and one of the things I used to be was addicted to radio and whatnot. I remember back then thinking that if I couldn't do that anylonger, my life would seem completely over with. I became sick and tired of hunger, failure and no accomplishment. Eventually I figured out what was contributing to holding me back in my life. Back then it was good to be just a few years after teenage life but I didn't have a pot to piss in. Now it's completely turned around where I'm mature and have a lot of accomplishments under my belt and life is good. I'd never want to go back and do that again. But if I was able to go back and do it all over again, I'd of done it much differently and start accomplishing earlier in my life. One such thing would be to never never get involved in music or being so engrossed even just listening to it.

Yeah, seems that way doesn't it. Well I did kick the habit of being on the forum for over a year. Every great once in a while I would read a post or two just to see what was happening on this side of the planet. What got me to actually post was when someone posted that they are trying to lose weight and that other thread where they talked about virtual concerts. I was compelled to comment about that. Things have been a bit slow these past few months, and I never get on during the weekend. No worries though. I love to break habits and eventually I'll break this one as easily as I've broken all the others.

I will miss the show and hearing Mark's smoker's rasp laugh, and Brian's cranked out impersonations and bits were a regular part of my morning routine...

As far as I'm concerned, Mark & Brian were the coolest fucking people on morning radio...just great positive energy, fun, vibe and honesty... I'd been listening to them for at least 20 years, when I left California in '04, they were a welcome reminder I'm home when I moved back 5 years later...

And their guests over the years are a veritable who's who...Steve Perry sang Happy Birthday to Mark in the late 90's, John Waite, Journey, Toto, Kevin Gilbert, ...shit...my brother's old band "The Tories" were on their show (I went to the Xmas show that year, 96 I think it was) and they were totally fucking cool too , to everyone...they respected and promoted GOOD music, alot of melodic rock too. Even tho their parent station played the same 20 classic rock songs relentlessly.

As lame as it could be at times when they went corporate (after Disney bought them) they still had class and were pretty funny.

It's an end of an era for Southern California and the markets they were carried in and I think Brian did the right thing...just wouldn't have been the same w/out Mark.

I listened from day one. I think they were right to move on, but I enjoyed them very much over the years. Was an emotional show today.

Just saw Rock of Ages on the weekend and noticed it had a huge KLOS billboard featured front and center once or twice.....on some of the scenes shot on the strip.

I'm a little confused? :? You didn't accomplish anything when you were younger because you listened to radio too much. "My life would seem completely over with" if you did that now? How effing addicted to radio were you?!

We all did stupid things when we were younger, most of us mature and have more accomplishments under our belt as we age. I don't think you're any different than at least 95% of the population?

I used to be more into music/concerts, etc. before I did the marriage/babies thing, but now that my child is older I have more free time again.......music has always been a great enjoyment to me, so yeah I'm enjoying more of it again. I don't see anything wrong with being involved in, or engrossed in, or listening to music....I enjoy a full and happy life and in fact music probably enrichs it too. IMO music is by far a better and healthier drug to choose. I'm willing to bet even at 80, given I'm still in good health, I'd choose attending a great live concert over sitting in front of a tv screen. :) As long as my favorite music is still being played (especially live), I will continue to enjoy it......until it isn't.

It was a destructive distractor for me where most of my attention was focused on it. Plus I brought that into a professional work environment where it had impact on my work performance and evaluations, not to mention being viewed by peers and subordinates as someone who is a bit immature and unprofessional. The overall impact was done to my professional growth. I chalk it up as being young and "stupid". But not all hope was lost as I was able to identify the issue, set my priorities in proper order and recover from it while still at the age where I could do so. I wouldn't want to do that all over again and if I did, I'd do things much differently the second time around. It is a regret but I was able to recover from it before it was too late. And in regards to the other comment that I made, yeah, there was a time when I couldn't imagine not having the stereo playing in my car or at work. I often would imagine not having it and it would make me feel like that would be the end of "my" world.

Interestingly though, I was never able to sleep with music playing because I would lay away and not sleep, I'd just lay there analyzing how each instrument is utilized in the song, the words, etc.

Now I like it quite most of the time, but if I do want to listen to music, it has to be when I am walking or driving. Most times its classical or Japanese. However, I do enjoy listening to the music while with my wife in the stores she likes to shop in like Bebe, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc.
