Pat Metheny is really the only one that came to mind.

I've been listening to Coltrane and Miles Davis a lot lately. As for jazz singers, I gotta go with Diana Krall.

When I am not listening to melodic rock, classic rock, or metal, I listen to opera and classical. I have a jazz collection but it doesn't get played alot.

Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons is the only one which I ever reach for with any kind of semi- regularity. Stan Getz, Duke Ellington, Pat Metheny and some Miles Davis are jazz artists which are ok.

For me, Jazz just doesn't do it for me. Not big on alot of horns, etc in my music. Blues, on the other hand..........especially rock with an underlying bluesy groove, I'm like a moth to a flame. Probably why I like so much of the 70s music or bands that you can hear are influenced by the 70s rock.

I hate all that 'doobie doobie widdly widdly aaah' stuff that jazzers do. And I hate all that self indulgent spiralling of saxophones that they do.

BUT - if they play a song straight and sing it straight without all of that crap and showing off, I love to hear Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.

Can't believe I forgot 2 of my favs - both of which Smitty is associated with:
Vital Information
Jean Luc Ponty

About 20 years ago (God I hate it when I tell a story that took place that long ago.... Makes ya feel old... ) I lived and worked in Winter Park, CO - Killer ski resort and also the home to the U.S. Olympic Handicapped Ski Team. I worked nights which left every day free to hit the slopes, which I did! (The last year I lived there, I got in 136 ski days! 8) 8) ) Nothing beats skiing 12" of new powder, down a black diamond run with moguls the size of VW Beetles (literally....) and jamming to Jean Luc and Pat Metheny's Last Train Home! Man, those were the days!
Anyone here ever skied Winter Park/Mary Jane? Drunken Frenchman or Outhouse anyone?

So was I. I must've tried 20 different derivatives before that one.
It cracks me up when people ask me what "Junior New York Rocks" means.  I just shake my head and walk away.

No. And no great stories. But I was in Winter Park in the summer, and it was beautiful!

It truly is. Pristine wilderness and high above the smog and city lights. Winter Park is at 9,100 ft. elevation and the summit is 12,200 ft. making the nighttime sky breathtaking! Living at that elevation takes some acclimating too. The first time I smoked pot there I was sooooooooooooo frickin' high - I thought I was never going to come down!   I swear to God I was doing the, "God, just let me come down and I SWEAR I'll never get high again!"

The Winter Park Jazz Festival is an awesome event! It's held at the base of the ski resort with the Continental Divide as the backdrop. It's very reminiscent of the concerts they had/have near Lake Tahoe back in the day. I think those concerts were called Mountainaire?? or something like that.
