Just an Observation...

Andrew posts a lot of Rock Springfield news on this site. Today even garnered a mention of a RS Tribute band. Question for the forum: Does anybody here really like Springfield? I've always been kind of embarrassed by him. Jesse's Girl is an ok song, I guess. But he just always struck me as more of a Hollywood creation... the General Hospital actor turned singer who had more looks than real hard core musical talent. i have to drag my wife, kicking and screaming, to a Springsteen concert. But she'd gladly overpay a babysitter to see Rick Springfield -- which tells me about all I need to know.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask. :?:

I love Rick Springfield. He's absolutely not any kind of Hollywood creation. He was a musician and had a record deal prior to General Hospital...that was all a case of timing. If I remember correctly, his record was supposed to precede the show, but was delayed. Acting was never supposed to be his main focus, it just kinda happened.

Anyway, he's a fantastic songwriter and has penned some of the best Pop-Rock hooks in history.

Man, RS can flat out jam on the guitar, much respect to him. Seen him a couple of times and that dude keeps his body in great shape for a man who is near or

is 60. Plus, a lot of young girls and milf's flock to his shows.

I've seen him in concert twice. First time was so so, second time he was great.

He's not all about his good looks and soap operas. I'd say he's paid his dues as a serious musician over the years. Love even his newer music. Loved the Venus in Overdrive album! Look so forward to this new one.

Every band has a "Jessie's girl" The song they are best known for, because it was over played, but really isn't the best of their career. But they embrace it, because its part of their history the audience eats up. I actually like songs that didn't ever make it mainstream. One of my favorite albums from the 80's was Tao.

Saw him live twice in recent years, and he's such a good showman, SUPER great and gracious to his audience!

One of my favorite Rick Springfield songs, from Tao, he wrote after losing his dad. It can still make me teary, especially after I lost my own dad years ago.

I'm a huge fan. The last three albums (4 really) are flat out amazing. The new one sounds great too, from what little ive heard so far. If you want music from someone that puts their absolute all into the creation of music, there's not many better than Springfield.

How the dude's wife has stayed with him is a puzzle to me, but it makes for good music. Complex, energetic. Some of the best stuff out there.

RS is going to be on this Wednesdays episode of Dr. Oz. I guess he has suffered from depression over the years and tried to commit suicide once? And is supposedly a sex-addict.

You need a few facts.

1 - Read the news properly. I'm promoting the RS Tribute ALBUM that I released on my own label.
2 - Why would you be embarassed by Rick? Did he do your wife?
3 - He fell into acting to pay the bills in the 70s having left Australia after hitting #1 with his music having been on the tour circuit alredy for 10 years. He wrote while acting and tried a few deals before the breakthrough Working Class Dog album in 1981.
4 - He went back to acting late 80s to keep himself busy after going thru writers block and another bout of depression. He's done acting on and off ever since.
5 - He hit the road again in the late 90s and hasn't stopped since.
6 - No real hardcore musical talent?? Bwahahaha. Ok, so writing all your own songs, playing most instruments on his albums (guitars, Keys, bass, drums) as well as producing them doesn't count??

I don't think that car Yulog posted is cool, but I do think Springfield is a solid artist. Like Loverboy, I find his later output much better than the material he released in his prime.

Well Andrew, Peter Frampton - for example - writes all his own songs and plays most instruments on his albums - and produces them. But I don't see nearly as much coverage on him here. I'd suggest a poll on this forum to ask how many people would prefer the likes of Springfield vs. Frampton in a live setting. Just for kicks. Honestly - no disrespect to RS here - I was just surprised to see he gets as much Melodicrock props as he does.

I've found a lot of people on this board have pretty insular tastes and many of them don't go as far back as even the 70s. Frampton isn't really in a lot of folks' wheelhouse here.

Fair enough -- I guess I was just wondering what elevates Rick Springfield to the level of getting a regular mention here. Is it genuine popularity?

Andrew is a huge fan of the guy. Everyone has their favorite musical artists that encompass everything you like about music. His site, so the favorite musical artist is going to get a lot of promotion.

if you're speaking of Andrew alone... could it be Rick is AUSTRALIAN? I think Rick fits in better on a board that has always been a predominantly Journey board, better than Frampton's style of rock.

nah....it's got to do with more than being Australian. Otherwise, you'd get a lot more coverage of other melodic rock/hard rock Aussie bands. Jimmy Barnes, a very popular Aussie rocker, released a solo album a year or two ago that was very much melodic rock and it barely got a passing mention and no review. No issue with that, as it's his site. It's more than just the local area. Anyway, regardless of where he's from, it appears from his tour dates that Springfield is US these days.

i wasn't saying it was the fact he's Australian alone. I was just saying that could be why he gets attention from Andrew, since he is pretty much a more local favorite to him. He's a fan of Men at Work too. It doesn't mean us Americans aren't fans. You don't think people have national pride when it comes to artists they enjoy? I think from what I've seen they do, and there isn't anything wrong with it either.
