Donald Fagen - Sunken Condos

Postby TotoStu » Wed Oct 17, 2012 3:18 am

On the 30th Anniversary of his seminal platter "The Nightfly", the el supremo himself Donald Fagen has released his fourth solo album "Sunken Condos". And it ain't bad. "The Weather In My Head" sounds like it could've been a pretty decent Steely Dan jam back in "The Royal Scam" era, and his cover of Isaac Hayes "Out Of The Ghetto" is a pretty decent slice of funk.

Overall it's not as good as "The Nightfly" (but what is?), but it's better than "Kamakiriad" (what isn't). Whether or not it's better than "Morph The Cat" (which I thought was pretty damn decent) is something only time and a few more listens can tell.

Thanks for the info. Why didn't they make another Steely Dan cd instead? I'll have to check it out and hear it. It's got to be better than the overhyped p.o.s.

Hmmm. Not sure I would really want another Steely Dan CD. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see them live again - and if they put out a live album or greatest hits for thier 40th anniversary with a couple of new tracks - I'd be first in line to get it...

But a full album? Not sure. IMO the last truly decent album they did was "Aja". "Gaucho" IMO was seriously undercooked, and then of course there was the 20 year hiatus. During that hiatus, the live album "Alive In America" came out and that wasn't too bad (although it seriously needed to be a double album IMO) but when they finally got round to doing studio recordings again, I found "Two Against Nature" and especially "Everything Must Go" to be rather uninspiring and dull. I can't remember the last time I really listened to them.

And let's face it, is it really possible for them to produce another one like "Can't Buy A Thrill", "Countdown To Ecstacy", "Katy Lied", "Pretzel Logic", "The Royal Scam" or "Aja"?

Time will tell I guess.

But still, "Sunken Condos" has got some nice jams on it.

Surprize, have you heard Walter Becker's solo album, "11 Tracks Of Whack"? Personally I quite dig it.

No I haven't and I will have to check that out. Still have all their albums from years gone by. Different, but great.
