New Senheiser IE 800 Earbuds are UNBELIEVABLE!

A friend of mine is the manager of the custom install division at a high end audio/video company here in Phoenix and he came over today to show me the new Senheiser ear buds that were given to him by the Sen. rep right before Christmas as a "thank you" for all the product my buddy has sold this year. One of the cool things about him being one of my close personal friends is the perks that go along with that given what he does for a living. Whenever something really cutting edge or uber-cool comes out, he makes it a point to get one to demo and I always get to spend some quality time with it. And, today wasn't any different - with the exception of how little he actually said about these new buds prior to me plugging them in.

The area of Personal/private audio has come a long way in the past 5 years with the overall quality and breadth of sound delivered via a 3.5mm jack. The spatialization and distortion reduction areas have seen the most improvements followed closely by small increments of bigger bass but nothing that really grabs you drops your jaw - until now. When Dre's line of Beats Audio products came out the marketing and ad hype intrigued me so I checked them out. They were decent but they weren't as good as they were talked-up to be. Most, if not all studio headsets would blow the doors off all of the Beats products.

After attaching them to my ears and getting them "just right" my buddy had a song all queued up and ready for my test drive: Breathe by Pink Floyd. Since there's no way I can possibly convey to you the experience I had, I'll just say it was unbelievable, and leave it at that. NOTHING currently being produced is even in the same class as these little gems. It was like I attached a pair of JBL studio 15's to my head and cranked them up. If you have an A/V store in your area that carries Senheiser, you must make it a point to stop in and give these ear buds a listen.

Remember the first time you heard the THX Dolby surround audio in a theater. Remember how advanced and incredible it sounded? It was sorta like that but much, much more amazing. I literally took the buds out after about 10 secs. just to look at what I had put in my ear.

Oh yeah.... the street price....? $1,000.00

Ear Buds are completely useless! I never really understood the concept of them. Interesting how real headphones have become en vogue again. I don't even know how people get ear buds to stay in their ear, as I never could.

for $1000 I'd go buy 3 pairs of AKG 702's.. or a pair of Sen HD700's, or pony up the $400 more for the Sen HD800's.....

of course a person who can drop $1k on earbuds probably isn't really worried about price anyways...

I think the main attraction with earbuds is the simplicity factor. They don't take up a lot of space and you don't even know your carrying them around with you.

Sound decent and easy to carry around. What I love about these the most is I can jog and hike without them falling out.

+1 - for the most part... I always came away disappointed whenever I would use a pair. As for the fit, that aspect really depends on the material used and the cleanliness, or more specifically, the oiliness of the ear canal.
And as technology has migrated to smaller and smaller in terms of speaker size (...and it all started with the Bose Acoustimass Systems...) I've continued to be very happy with my giant Fishers and even bigger Cerwin Vegas which deliver a far superior sound to a lot of the latest - greatest speakers!
Now, as for these ear buds, they aren't like ANYTHING you've ever heard in that platform. If I wasn't somewhat familiar with the methodology and the technology they employed in creating them, my mind wouldn't have been able to believe my ears.

for $1000 I'd go buy 3 pairs of AKG 702's.. or a pair of Sen HD700's, or pony up the $400 more for the Sen HD800's.....

of course a person who can drop $1k on earbuds probably isn't really worried about price anyways...

OIne of the things on my daughter's xmas list this year was a pair of Beats ear buds. They're a hundred freakin' bucks!!! You'd be safe to assume there weren't any under our tree xmas morning!

Me either. The only one's that I've ever been able to use are the stock iPod ones, and I have to wedge the left one in the right ear and vice versa. I have tiny ear canals so I can't get the ones that go in there, in there at all.

No matter what kind of ear buds you get, they all seem to fuck up in less than 2 years. I usually buy Bose until I woke up & bought a cheaper brand that

was in the mid-price range. They work just as well for what I use them for.

Like I stated before, the sound was so robust and full it was like I had strapped a pair of studio monitors to my head. Hell, they could be 1/4 the price and they'd still be too expensive for ear buds. One thing I didn't mention in my OP was that the designers at least gave some thought to the damage that happens to more than a few pairs of ear buds - yanking on the cord hard enough to break it somewhere in line. These have breakaway connections at both the bud and the jack which you simply just reconnect if they come apart.

But it's not just the yanking. The cords eventually become worn & frayed to the point of wires showing, one ear bud goes out while the other one works.

And the most aggravating problem is you can't seem to fix them yourself, small pieces of shit that they are!

I have a $30 pair of gaming headphones that I use for "normal" internet surfing etc.. but when I want to listen to music or watch a movie I wear my AKG-702's.

The 702's are fairly flat response-wise, I bought them for my home studio... and the difference in sound stage is incredible. Clarity, Depth of field. Accuracy. But that's the difference between $30 headphones and $350 headphones.

I'd encourage anyone who's never tried on a pair of quality headphones to try it.. the experience is pretty amazing.

Ditto! The thing that's most incredible, for lack of a better word, is that unless you've personally experienced THAT kind of difference in what is being delivered via such a tiny piece of equipment, you have what I can only describe as an optical illusion via your ears. Your brain has a difficult time processing what it's hearing.
